Post P to V or V to P restore
I'm really curious about this as well. We are doing a lot of DR stuff for multiple customers and if I could do a P to V restore of the OS and System State it would make life a lot easier. Right now we get a P2V of the physical server and keep it in cold storage until a DR test or a real disaster.

Post P to V or V to P restore
You should have a look at 1-Touch. This would allow you to build a boot image that includes VMWare driver set so you can restore a whole physical inside a VM.

you will find that a restore to different hardware is officially not supported by microsoft. However, I have done this a bunch of times successfully. It does however unfortunately depend very heavily on the machine. I've had machines that will work and machines that will not work.

I'll copy/paste some notes I made here anyway. VM to VM is easy by the way, works well. here is how a P to V standard recovery works for me. I have had the issue that if unsuccessful the windows logo will just freeze during startup.

I've removed my environment specific info.

I would NEVER rely on the below method by the way, if this is something you want to do regularly you should investigate other options. This is more of something to try in cases of for example the original hardware actually exploding and having nothing else to restore to. I'd say I've had around ... 60% success doing this.

Please note that my notes are from simpana 8 as well, I've only just completed the upgrade to 9 and haven't had a chance to test in 9. I assume it will be very similar though.

Step 1
Build a VM machine with the same SP level same windows versions and Partitions/drive sizes as the original box.

Step 2
Assign IP address to box and then install the simpana agent.

Step 3
For the existing server, take a copy of the boot.ini file and paste it back in the same folder so there is a copy. This contains boot info for the drives. VM will fail if you don’t preserve this file as the drive locations are different.

Step 4
Expand the tree in the backup, right click subclient and say ‘Browse Backup data’
Set for browse the latest data if you have the latest tapes for the DR restore you did otherwise Pick the date. (change copy precedence if needed)

OK
Now select all drives and system state and say ‘recover all selected’

restore/overwrite all (loads will fail due to files in use). Select OK, you will get a warning and you can compare the SP level of the servers before restore. Ensure they are the same or you're in for misery.

When complete you will receive a prompt to restart the target machine.

ENSURE YOU FIRST DELETE BOOT.INI and copy back the copy you made pre restore. Otherwise the system will not boot.

You will see hardware messages after reboot. Login to the box if it starts and do the following

Open cmd and type set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1 and then ENTER.

Now open device manager from the cmd line by typing start devmgmt.msc and show hidden devices from the menu. THIS MUST BE RUN FROM THE COMMAND LINE WHERE YOU SHOW THE HIDDEN DEVICES

Go to network cards and right click uninstall anything that is greyed out. It’s most likely that these dead cards are hogging the IP address.

Now set the IP address of the new network card and the restore is complete.
