Quick Troubleshoot

Post Quick Troubleshoot
I have a MS server called lvc-sql2008 (but we're just using MS File System iDA). It has worked fine for a long time. All of a sudden starting 5 days ago, I get the error Waiting for the services on the client [lvc-sql2008] to come online.

Now, from my commserve AND from the client, I can cvping each other. I can also, from the commcell GUI, Browse the client from the content tab. I'm using the hostnames from the client properties screen.

How would a server generate this error if I can cvping and browse the client?

Yes, I've bounced CV on both the client and the commserve (I rebooted the commserve 2 days ago), lvc-sql2008 has not been rebooted (production server, cannot reboot during the week)

Try stopping and starting the commvault services on LVC-SQL2008
Then fire up gxtail.exe (in the Base directory) and use it to open CVD.LOG to see if any errors get reported

Bill,

I have the same issue with one of my windows idata clients as well. Attempting to uninstall the client fails and I had to manually remove all registry keys and folders. On reinstall everything appears to be fine until the client attempts to get the idata agent configuration from the commserve. That is where the install fails. However after reinstalling to this point the client is now backing up successfully. I am still troubleshooting this issue with support though.

If they're stuck in stopping phase, and given its just then file system Ida, then you should be able to forcefully kill cvd.exe without having to reboot the server

Sent from my iPad, excuse the brevity

Not sure why my last email didn't get through... anyway here is what I wrote before:

Also thought WRT the services not stopping you have to manually kill cvd.exe from the process list. Then you will need to remove the following registry keys manually. Once the services have stopped you can manually remove the client by doing the following.
Delete these registry keys.

HKLMSoftwareCommvault Systems

HKLMSystemCurrent ControlSetServices (delete the GxEvMgrC, the and the GxCVD keys)

Then you will have to do a search here HKLMSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionUninstall for the GUIDs associated with the idata agent and the base client. Delete both of those, and finally delete the Commvault folder in C:Program Files

This will manually uninstall the agents. From there you should be able to reinstall and see if backups will work again.

Try killing CDV.exe and starting the services from the Simpana Service Manager again. This is what I do when my services get stuck in the “stopping” state when I try to stop them. Often if I can’t kill CVD.exe from the Task Manager on the machine I am able to kill it remotely with PSKill.exe from SysInternals.

Bill,
Have you solved this yet? The affected client here started failing again for no apparent reason. I am going to reopen my support case with Commvault.

I'd also make sure someone hasn't added the client name with the wrong ip to the hosts file on the CommServ.

Hi Andy,
How did you get on with Commvault regarding re-opening your support call? I am having the same problem with a 'select' number of windows 2003 and 2008 servers, some working fine, some giving the error "Waiting for the services on the client [SERVER_NAME] to come online" at the scan stage of the backup.

A restart of services on the client allows the backup to continue, but this has to be done each morning for each affected server trying to complete an incremental from the night before.
I would like NOT to have to manually remote onto those servers and restart the services on the client each time.

As with the original poster ... I am able to ping and telenet to the client from commserv and vice-versa. I can also, from the commcell GUI, Browse the client from the content tab. How would a server generate this error if I can ping and browse the client?

using 'gxtail.exe' (in the Base directory) to open CVD.LOG to see if any errors get reported; there are some connection errors, I will start going through each one by one and see how i get on, but i was hoping that you got a patch or some resolution from Commvault?
