Rebooting Commserve while backups running

Post Rebooting Commserve while backups running
If I reboot the Commserve (vCool while backups are running, will they continue to run? Or will they suspend? Or will they die?!
It will be down for several hours and I have some long running backups that will have started before the downtime. I would hope they will continue to run?
The Commserve is not an MA, it just hosts the SQL DB.

Yes - the sql database that also records afile information and also orchestrates backups so they won't be happy Smile

Most likely yes those jobs will go into a pending state of sorts given there's no Job Manager module online (on the CS) and when you bring your CS back up, you'll have to either resume and let them complete or kill them completely and start a fresh backup...

I don't mind resuming them, but killing/restarting them would be a major problem as they would run beyond our backup window.Anyone got a definitive answer?

Martin,

No offense but you're not going to get a better answer than that - and if this *that* critical then you should be calling the commvault line now as U.S. support will be just coming online.

You've taken down the CommServe which houses the critical components - Job Manager, CommServe DB *and* MediaManager which the MA itself relies on to report back to, not to mention EvMgrS (event manager server).

The CommServe is not just a DB.  It's also a critical piece of software.

The better question is .. what happened to the CS?

Luke

Not definitive, but in the past when troubleshooting a problem, CV support suspended all jobs and restarted the services on my CommServe.  You can't get much closer to rebooting than that.  After the restart the jobs resumed fine.

Post Rebooting Commserve while backups running
I haven't taken anything down yet, just planning it SmileI know the Commserve is critical, I just thought there would be a yes/no answer. Will it or won't it require a restart of running jobs?
The people in this forum are generally knowledgeable so I thought I would ask here.

I have to do power maintenance on the data center that houses the Commserve. So it will be offline for up to 3 hours. I just need to plan around that. Longterm we should look into a DR solution for a failover Commserve.

Post Rebooting Commserve while backups running
I have a "bad" commserve. The job manager.exe file on weekends always grows to fill the paging file (16GB) and crashes the server. So I have to cold reboot the server (basically yank the power) once a week. The only thing I've seen that's a pain in the butt is the million alerts I get (1 from each running job, which is around 500) that the Job Manager restarted.

I haven't seen adverse effects on the backups. They seemed to go with the flow okay on a cold reboot.

There are Jobs like File System backups which are resumable

and there are Jobs like Database Backups which are restartable

the Jobmanager will try to restart any Job 144 times and will wait for 20 times until the next restart

A Filesystem Backup can resume at the last completed chunk, so only some Data has to be retransmitted.

Database Backups will usually restart at the beginning

I hope that this will help a bit

Kind Regards
Mike
