No, you definitely need SRM because otherwise that level of detail isn't collected and stored anywhere in a format that you can easily query.
To elaborate -- the CS Database stores all the other metadata required for operation (Job IDs, client information, media, Agent configuration, etc etc.), but doesn't contain the actual indexes collected from your backups [the file list of what you've backed up]. That's stored with the backups, and also as a copy in your Index Cache for when you perform a Browse/Find.
As for the Index Cache, I've been told that as of V9 with the SRM option, that CV can use this to provide SRM reports off the back of your successful/completed backups.
I've not had time to look into this functionality myself, so you may want to enquire further with your acct. mgr. and/or test it out with a eval key. My exposure to SRM has been through when it was a separate install called QSM/Storage Manager a couple of versions back, and I simply haven't had a chance to take SRM v9 for a proper spin yet

"If SRM feature is enabled, SRM reports can be generated for all backup data as soon as the first full backup job has completed."

Thanks Luke!
The SRM package definitely looks like the reporting suite we want to look at. Not to be cheap, but could this data be extracted using properly written MSSQL queries against the Commvault database? I am just wondering if anyone has spent the time learn the schema and write any of the queries...
Thanks for your help!

*SRM File Level Analytics*

snippet:
"File Level Analytics is the collection, analysis, and reporting of data in
your enterprise so that enhanced optimization of your storage capacity can
be achieved.
File Level Analytics provides the following file-level details, such as:
- Volume and directory on which file resides
- *Type of files*
- *Size of files*
- Client computer on which file resides
- *User name of file owner*

Hope this helps you out -- if you'd like to give it a go, speak with your
CV/reseller and ask for a trial license

That's definitely not what Search would do for you...
Content Indexing [CI] is meant to provide a search engine and interface to
both archived data, compliance data (ie. Exchange Compliance Archiver /
journal mailbox/captured emails -- think e-Discovery) as well as data on
primary storage.
Essentially, a google-like search page for your data.
If you're looking to fulfill the need to report on files > 1GB then you
should be looking at SRM:
http://documentation.commvault.com/commvault/release_9_0_0/books_online_1/english_us/prod_info/srm_server.htm
snippet:
"*Capacity Management and Planning* - The ability to locate, monitor, and
analyze the usage and availability of storage resources over time. SRM
provides numerous customizable reports which illustrate the current and
historical usage patterns of file systems and application-specific
resources, thus helping administrators plan for future growth in storage
demand by analyzing historical trends. Administrators can also identify
wasted and unallocated space to optimize the utilization of present
resources."

Does anyone use Search (Content Indexing)? Are there best practices for
installing the FAST server?
We are looking into buying the search feature because of the need to
report on files that are larger than 1 GB as well as determine who has 100
GB of music and movies being backed up (unfortunately we have valid music
and video that needs to be backed up so global filtering is not an option
here.)
Also does anyone know what the pricing model of the Search tool is?
Thanks,
Andy
