Post Simpana 8 Synthetic Backups
HI

First of fall Synthetic full backup will cont consider as backup becasue its just consolidate the data. It is created from the most recent full backup (i.e., standard or synthetic) and subsequent incremental and/or differential backups.

Go throuhg this link you will get clear picture of synthetic full.

Trying to understand Synthetics. We run weekly synthetic fulls with the option selected to run a incremental first. When a synthetic starts it runs an incremental first which goes fine, then it kicks off the synthetic. The synthetics are taking as along as regular fulls. I thought that since all the backups are already on disk they would be much quicker than a full. When I log into the client during the synthetic I don't see a backup agent running which is what I would expect, since the data is already backed up, but the synthetics still take forever. At slow sites they are taking multiple days which is causing my incrementals to miss. Is this normal? Also, what does the actual synthetic do? Is it moving the data around on the backend which is causing delays?

I don't think this really explains the pros & cons of a SYN FULL backup - here's a repaste of something I sent back in Feb 2010:

SYN FULL backups differ in only how it's constructed .. instead of reading the data required for a Full backup from the client, it reads the last Full backup and all subsequent Incremental backups from the maglib - then writes this back to the maglib as a new full.
In saying that, you are shifting the I/O on your maglib from Write to Read/Write which can have a profound performance impact depending on how many Synthetic Full backups you are running at once, your storage array, cache, etc. ---- check the disk queue length to see if you're hammering your disk library.
Fragmented mount paths will also impact your SYN FULL performance too..
Recommendation is to use SYN FULLs sparingly (MAPI-level backups, highly dense file servers, servers backing up across slow WAN links)

If the purpose of SYN FULL in your environment is to lower the load on your client servers, I'd recommend looking at client-side de-duplication in v9 instead as a more effective solution.
