Post Simpana 9 firewalling
Hi Commvault Group,
does anyone have some experience with the new fire-walling Options in Simpana 9.

I have recently upgraded from 8 to 9 and started to upgraded Clients some firewalled clients.

I had to do some changes because the 8.0 firewall config files contains networks instead of hosts.

However now i am a bit concerned because the tool to setup firewalling has been renamed to firewallconfigdeprecated.

If i have to change the old school firewalling and set it up in the GUI for the new school firewalling that means a lot of work > 600 Backup Clients ?

Kind Regards
Michael

Post Simpana 9 firewalling
Michael,
When you upgrade client using installer based process, old style firewall configuration would automatically converted to 9.0 style configuration with following rules:
Entry
Description
Conversion Comments
192.168.0.*
IP wildcard
Will not be converted automatically
*.fw.commvaul.com
Hostname wildcard
Will not be converted automatically
192.168.1.2
Exact IP
Will be converted only if the client is recorded in the CS DB having net_hostname=192.168.1.2.
host.commvault.com
Exact FQDN
Will be converted only if the client is recorded in the CS DB having net_hostname=host.commvault.com

You will get a message during client upgrade if the conversion is successful or failure. If your client configuration is not converted to 9.0 during upgrade Simpana will still be functional using old style configuration even if client is upgraded to 9.0. But it is recommended that you convert this configuration to 9.0 in order to take advantage of enhance functionality.
In order to update firewall configuration for clients which did not happen during upgrade process you can follow these steps : From Commcell Console, create one or more client groups, add clients to groups, configure firewall setting at client group level and push configuration from client group level. This will take care of updating config. for all clients in one shot. Once this new configuration is done this will take precedence over 8.0 configuration. You can remove 8.0 config. files later using firewallconfigdeprecated. Firewallconfigdeprecated utility can be used only to update/remove old style files. Similarly change configuration on CS and MA also related to this client and push configuration.
thanks

Post Simpana 9 firewalling
HI Michael:
With 9.0 firewall code; firewall tunnels are identified using client names instead of IP addresses/Host names. With the new style; lot of issues like NAT support, client changing IP addresses, host name change, etc could be handled easily.

The old firewall files are still valid and you don’t have to touch it if you don’t want to do anything to it. Once you upgrade the clients to 9.0 all firewall configurations could be maintained thru GUI. This is how it works.
<![if !supportLists]>1) <![endif]>8.0 client and below, uses old firewall files
<![if !supportLists]>2) <![endif]>9.0 client and above, if GUI configuration is present then it takes precedence even though you have files left over in the client. If no GUI configuration then old firewall files are used if present.

You could use client groups to configure firewall configuration to make your admin work simpler.

With regards,
-Prakash
