Backup Central

Hi guys,

I'm working on backing up a collection of NDMP volumes on a Netapp
filer using NDMP and controlled by Commvault 9sp5b but I have a
specific need to do the backup based on a specific named snapshot.

The idea is that I snapshot two or more volumes at the same time, then
backup the snapshots sequentially using NDMP. Is this possible? I've
been looking over the docs, and I can certainly write a pre/post
script to create and cleanup the snapshots without any problems.

Has anyone got this working? The online docs are NOT clear about how
this would be done. My other option would be to have a pre-script
which just creates a flex clone volume of the source volumes, and then
backs up each of those volumes. Uglier, but might be the only option
I have.

My volumes are a mix of FC Luns and NFS data. I already know that I
can snapshot the luns and access the data via the snapshot without a
problem, so restores should be just fine. A bit manual, but easy
enough to do.

Any hints, gotchas or suggestions?

Hi John,
Yes, it is possible to backup specific snapshots with the NAS iDA (NDMP). In the documentation, go to the NAS iDA (under the “Backup” pulldown select “More…” then click on “NAS”). Under “Advanced Options” click on “Backup”. Click on “Backup Snapshots”.

When kicking off or scheduling a backup click the “Advanced” button and then select the “NAS Options” tab. There is an option to enter the snapshot name. You can only enter one snapshot name for the backup – so if you have more than one volume in your subclient content, your script to create the snapshot would need to create a snapshot with the same name on both volumes.

Also note that the snaps on the 2 volumes do not need to be backed up sequentially. The subclient properties has a “Number of Data Readers” setting to indicate how many paths in the subclient to try to backup in parallel (if the storage policy has free streams).
