Storage considerations for backing up Exchange 2010?

Post Storage considerations for backing up Exchange 2010?
We're currently using Novell GroupWise 8. We've got five post offices with a total of about 8000 users. We are looking at planning a migration over to Exchange 2010 in 2012. We may end up having only 1500 power users on site and others in Live < at > Edu ([email]Live < at > Edu[/email]) (in the cloud).

In GroupWise terms, these so-called power users consume roughly 250GB of storage space. Backups so far have consisted of a database copy script and copying the raw post office data to a place that CV can back it up with standard Linux file iDA's.

Are there any special requirements as far as CV is concerned regarding storing Exchange data, capacity-wise? We currently are on CV9 and are using deduplication, with mostly good results. Will migrating to Exchange require additional backup storage capacity beyond what GroupWise used? Is there such a thing as a DR backup of an Exchange system such that I could restore our entire system including messages, users, calendars, and so on? If so, is this DR functionality built into the CV Exchange iDA?

Post Storage considerations for backing up Exchange 2010?
Hey Ben,

Can’t comment on the de-dupe side as your data may differ from what I have but in my previous environment Exchange DB did de-duplicate quite well with a standard Weekly FULL / Daily INCR backup schedule.  (I’d quote some figures but can’t find where I put the storage policy report… maybe others here can comment?)    Keep in mind that GroupWise .vs. Exchange DB dedupe I would expect slightly different figures due to the difference in the way data is structured in their respective databases.

I can comment on the DR side J   Standard backup of your Exchange Database with the CommVault agent is sufficient for DR purposes, provided you are also covering other angles (AD backup, see bottom of email).

Wall of text incoming, going to make some assumptions here about your knowledge on Exchange and see if this helps you out.  Let me know if you have questions or if I missed something.

DR scenarios

<![if !supportLists]>1. <![endif]>Loss of single database store
<![if !supportLists]>o <![endif]>Two ways:
<![if !supportLists]>§ <![endif]>Exchange’s equivalent to the restore area is a Recovery Group (used to be called a Recovery Storage Group in Ex2003/2007).   Supports mailbox stores only (not public folders), you basically create an RG and have CommVault restore directly into that for further processing.  Processing is done server-side by admins, instead of Groupwise’s client-side/self-service.
<![if !supportLists]>ˇ <![endif]>Procedure here -> http://documentation.commvault.com/commvault/release_9_0_0/books_online_1/english_us/products/exchange_database/restore_adv.htm#OOP_Storage
<![if !supportLists]>§ <![endif]>Out-of-place restore with Exchange 2010 .. you can restore the database files out-of-place for processing (or whatever you’d like to do to said files) before you load them into Exchange.  Requires Ex DB backups to be VSS-enabled, which I highly recommend anyway and is on by default AFAIR.
<![if !supportLists]>ˇ <![endif]>Procedure here -> http://documentation.commvault.com/commvault/release_9_0_0/books_online_1/english_us/products/exchange_database/restore_adv.htm#OOP_Disk

<![if !supportLists]>2. <![endif]>Loss of entire server
<![if !supportLists]>o <![endif]>Re-build the OS (whether via CommVault full system restore or provision a replacement host, depends on your  procedures and approach to DR), use Microsoft’s documentation to perform a disaster recovery install of the Exchange server, then use CommVault to restore latest FULL/Incremental backups as necessary.

<![if !supportLists]>o <![endif]>Coverage in Books Online here -> http://documentation.commvault.com/commvault/release_9_0_0/books_online_1/english_us/products/exchange_database/dr.htm

Also, make sure you have a backup of your Active Directory environment.

The AD schema contains certain settings required for Exchange to operate.  File System (with System State) backup of at least one of your Domain Controllers will cover this, though as an added option you can provide additional coverage on top of a File System backup with the Active Directory iDA for granular-level recovery…

Cheers,
Luke
