System State Backup Eating Drive Space
Author Message
Post System State Backup Eating Drive Space
I have a 2003 Windows Domain Controller/file server (I know bad idea, didn't have a choice) running the IDA file system agent and Active Directory agent. The file system agent is selected to backup system state and e and f drives. (May be unnecessary since the AD agent is there?) Problem is I am almost out of disk space on my E:drive because the System Volume Info folder (normally hidden) is full of tons of 500-600 MB files that are not being deleted. On Google found references to issues with CommVault backing up system state and not removing the files when done. I have many other systems running similar setup with no issues. Running Simpana 8 Build 68 SP5. Looking to see how I can stop this and how I can free up space? Also, if I uncheck back up system state and it fixes the issue is that a problem if I need to do an AD restore with the AD agent?
Thanks

I had this exact issue on my servers. The fix is on the windows OS. You can limit the % of the drive's disk space that can be used with vss (system state portion of the backup is using vss even if you don't check the 'use vss' checkbox).

There was supposed to be a cv patch that fixed this but its only when these files get locked during backup failures. I'd use the windows config for vss.

Post System State Backup Eating Drive Space
Sounds like stale vss snapshots.
Run vssadmin list shadowstorage and see if that tells you if VSS is consuming the space.  If so you can use vssadmin to both remove those snapshots and also set the max limit for space consumption.
Also the ad agent gives you granular restores with ad, system state will just restore all of ad. Post System State Backup Eating Drive Space
Not a good idea, doesn't fix your existing stale snapshots and you lose DR coverage for your server as you want both a full file system and system state backup to recover.
(use system state, not the ad agent to do full/dr recovery of active directory) On 16-Apr-2011 8:57 AM, "erlarson2000 < at > yahoo.com (erlarson2000 < at > yahoo.com)" <erlarson2000 < at > yahoo.com (erlarson2000 < at > yahoo.com)> wrote: > What if just uncheck backup system state on the file agent?
Thanks for the quick response

I had this exact issue on my servers. The fix is on the windows OS. You can limit the % of the drive's disk space that can be used with vss (system state portion of the backup is using vss even if you don't check the 'use vss' checkbox).

There was supposed to be a cv patch that fixed this but its only when these files get locked during backup failures. I'd use the windows config for vss.

Subject: [commvault] System State Backup Eating Drive Space

Thanks
