 Upgrade from 8 to 9
Anyone know of any issues or gotcha's when upgrading Simphana from version 8 to version 9?

 Upgrade from 8 to 9
No, but take advantage of their new Cloud offering to test your database upgrade before you do it on your live system. The documentation site calls it "Database Inspection" but it's really upgrade testing:

The documentation also doesn't provide a direct link to the site you're supposed to upload it to; here's that link:

Note that the Email address you provide must be a Commvault employee's email address, so contact support or your account SE and use their email address. The reason for this is the output of the test includes a link to a cloud CommCell that they stand up, load your database, upgrade it to V9, then send the CommVault employee a link to the RDP session of that CommServe... and that's on their internal network, so you need to work with a CV employee.
Still a nice way to verify before you do it live on your own environment!

Potentially. Use the Commvault database validation tool first, and if possible don’t upgrade, take a DR set and rebuild your CommCell from scratch (unless the guidance has changed)..

 Upgrade from 8 to 9
One: if you still have older OS that are no longer supported in version 9, like for example Windows 2000, make sure to keep the agent you have installed on these machines. You can find the list of things to look out for here: http://documentation.commvault.com/commvault/release_9_0_0/books_online_1/english_us/deployment/common_upgrade/imp_considerations.htm
If you are using dedup in version 8, it is quite different in version 9, but the good news is that you can upgrade your V8 DDB to V9. Here are the info on this: http://documentation.commvault.com/commvault/release_9_0_0/books_online_1/english_us/features/dedup_disk/tools.htm#Upgrade_the_Deduplication_Database
On thing to note: If you setup a DDB in version 8, it can be converted to V9 but will still remain a standalone DDB. If you need to use global deduplication, you will need to create a new global DBD once upgraded to V9.

I've had a lot of customer upgrade to 9 and usually it's a smooth process but it's still a good thing to be aware of the small details. But I am sure Troy, you already knew that

This provides a step-by-step guide to the upgrade process. For example, it list the right order for the upgrade:
1 - Commserve
2 - Media Agents
3 - Clients
Upgrade in this order and everything will be fine!

Hi,
-We had some issues after upgrade about single sign on. So if you planning to upgrade and your AD admin password has been changed then you should reconfigure sso before upgrade.
-Other issue we had faced annoying problem about upgrade SQL Server. The problem was related with Operation System Language. If your OS language other than English probably you should face with this issue.
Additionally you should do what Paul wrote. J

Potentially. Use the Commvault database validation tool first, and if possible don’t upgrade, take a DR set and rebuild your CommCell from scratch (unless the guidance has changed)..

Make sure you go straight to Version, SP4b as soon as you can if you
have any of the following:
Solaris 10, x86_64 MAs
NDMP backups, directed by sol 10 x86_64 MAs
I've been bitten hard by waiting until 9SP3 before I did my upgrade,
and I still had to get a couple of patches applied to fix crashes I
found. I'm quite disappointed by the testing CommVault has done with
verion 9, I can imagine that my setup is all the unusual.
One crash was the cvd daemon would crash randomly, causing backups to
hang. Another was a segmentation fault in the NasBackup process,
which also caused NDMP backups to hang and not run at all.
Really sucky to deal with. Other backups seem to be fine though I
haven't played much with confirming that Sharepoint restores work.

 Any Media agent upgrade issues going from v8.5 to v94b?
We are upgrading a windows MA and it just hangs.

 Upgrade from 8 to 9
I didn't really see anyone mention moving from 8 to 9 that had been previously upgraded from 7 to 8.
We had upgraded some time ago, from 7 to 8 without any problems, and decided a while ago to go 9. We submitted our DB and it passed, etc, but when we went to upgrade to 9 failure after failure. Finally we had to just build a new 9 environment.
So that said, if your 8 environment, is an upgrade from 7, you may face some of those same issues.

 Upgrade from 8 to 9
I started at commvault 6 back in 2006 and have upgraded up to 9 as the versions came out. And this may not fit your situation, but we decided that the upgrade to v9 would be the time where we make the commserve a VM. So after upgrading the commserve from 8 to 9, we imported it to the vm (same name and IP).
That said, my test lab commserve did the same upgrade and remained on the same box, but we don't really do a lot of work on that box, so maybe that problem never surfaced for me.
