Upgrade to V8 Commserve - will existing v7 clients be ok?
Author Message
Post Upgrade to V8 Commserve - will existing v7 clients be ok?
I am planning my upgrade to v8.
If I upgrade my Commserve to v8, will all the v7 clients and media agents still work? They are all v7 SP5.

Obviously I will update them later, but the process will take a few weeks.

I am slightly worried because when I tested installing a v7 agent against a v8 Commserve I got a "version conflict" error and couldn't install.

Am I right in assuming existing v7 clients are ok but any new ones must be v8?

We upgraded the commserve and the media agents at once, then the clients over the next few days. We only had issues with 8 of our 300 clients.

Correct.
Existing V7 are ok. But new installs should be V8.

Of the 8, 6 of them were still running fine with 7, but would not upgrade to 8. We had to uninstall the 7, then fresh install the 8 and that resolved the issue. The other 2 were in the DMZ, and somehow lost the firewall settings. We just had to delete and re-add the firewall files.

There were no client reboots needed. For our size environment, it was a very smooth upgrade.

Post Upgrade to V8 Commserve - will existing v7 clients be ok?
1. I recommend you upgrade all your media agents at the same time. The CommServer (and CommVault support people) are much happier when the CS and all MAs are at the same level.

2. Make sure you upgrade to V8 service pack 4 (the latest). Do not upgrade to V8 without any service packs.

3. Your V7 clients will be fine and will still work OK, especially if they are (as you say) at SP5.

4. Upgrade the clients later as you can, but also to the same service pack as the CS and MAs (currently SP4).

5. Once you have upgraded the CommServer, you will only be able to install new clients at V8 - if you attempt to install new V7 clients against a V8 CommServer, the install will fail. This should not be a problem - install V8 clients (and, again, apply the latest service pack).

6. The current cut of the V8 DVDs (downloadable from CommVault's Maintenance Advantage web site) are dated January 2010 and INCLUDE service pack bundled. They also contain other minor fixes to the base install kit, which we needed to avoid some weird client install errors.

7. You will not need to stop/start/reboot your clients in order to upgrade the CS and MAs, so no interruption to the clients is necessary. But the CommVault services on the CS and MAs will be stopped and started as part of the install, and again with the service pack install. Obviously.

If you have lot of clients to upgrade, you can copy the packages to commserve cache and do an upgrade from gui. Followed by the upgrade job, you can run an automatic update job to get the service pack on.

Can't you only upgrade clients that match the OS of your Commserve/MA's?

I can't get copy to cache to work with .tar files for solaris/linux.

You need to copy both windows and unix packages from their respective DVDs using copyToCache utility. Not from tar files.
