Post Upgrade to Version 9 and reinstall server
We are going to be upgrading from version 8 to version 9 and will be converting our physical 2003 server to a 2008 VM

Whats the best way to go about this.

1) Install fresh copy of 2008 with version 9 and restore version 8 database "If possible and would be the easiest way" Smile

2) Convert physical 2003 server to VM and then Upgrade to version 9.
Then Install a fresh copy of 2008 and with version 9 and restore version 9 database

3) Upgrade physical server to version 9
Then Install a fresh copy of 2008 and with version 9 and restore version 9 database

Do you have support? Log a support case and have them upgrade the database to version 9.

I went the route of upgrading version 8 directly to 9. Dell/commvault support told me the best practice is to have the database converted to 9 (by them) then installing a fresh copy of 9 and recovering the database. This is an extremely easy procedure.

Also in version 9 if your mediaagent is on the same box, you don't need to install it after the recovery anymore.

I had nothing but problems upgrading the install from 8 to 9 using the upgrade option. End result was a total reinstall and recovery of database.

If I was you I would install the new machine and install the software all new and recover the database into the new box. Don't upgrade/convert anything. Fresh install. Simpana is actually really easy now with the DR backup, but don't recover an 8 database to a 9 install, ensure you check it with support.
