 VMware browsing issue
I know about the need for the LinuxMetadataSupport to do file level browsing on Linux VM's backed up via the virtual server agent.
However, I have a windows 2003 VM I just backed up last night and I can't do file level browsing. Only the vmdk level browsing
I did confirm with a report of yesterday's backup that I did have Enable Granular Recovery : TRUE
What am I missing?

Bill,
Is this Snap backup or regular backup? Did your backup successfully collected the metadata for that VM?

 VMware browsing issue
This is a snapshot backup.
It would appear that it didn't get metadata since I can only get the vmdk files. I thought Windows servers did that automatically. I have other windows boxes that I can browse just fine... I thought the only thing you needed was to make sure the schedule or schedule policy you're using has the Enable Granular Recovery checkbox checked.

Bill,
It could be due to mount failure or something while metadata collection in backup time. Check if you can find any errors in vsbkp.log. If you have issues in mounting snap please contact Commvault Support.

Silly question.. You're browsing from the backup set or subclient, not from backup history?

 VMware browsing issue
Bill,
If this was a snap protect job please make sure that when doing the browse that you select the media agent where you did the snap protect job. This is because the VSA is installed here and where the data is may be on another ma. By selecting the ma where the VSA agent is will make sure that the snap is mounted where the VSA is.
Thank you,
Bill

I know about the need for the LinuxMetadataSupport to do file level browsing on Linux VM's backed up via the virtual server agent.
However, I have a windows 2003 VM I just backed up last night and I can't do file level browsing. Only the vmdk level browsing
I did confirm with a report of yesterday's backup that I did have Enable Granular Recovery : TRUE
What am I missing?

 VMware browsing issue
It isn't snap protect. I haven't yet figured out how to implement that, so it's Virtual Center.
Here is the response from cv tech support. I don't yet know if I can fix this in my environment.
I can confirm that MetaData Collection is not supported for a Cluster size of 512.
On the virtual machine we can check this using fsutil fsinfo ntfs info c:
The bytes per cluster needs to be at least 1024 bytes (e.g. 1mb)
The virtual machines that are collecting metadata successfully are 1024 bytes or greater, this is a limitation by VMWare
You can update the virtual machine cluster size with a third party tool such as Acronis Disk Director.
To retrieve files we need to do a container level restore or install a file system agent on the client.
