All,

I have a couple of questions:

Over the last 3 years we have been backing up a number of systems
(clients). Recently we have decommissioned a couple of those systems.
If I deleted the clients from the current Networker configuration, how
hard will it be to restore files corresponding to those clients or will
this not be possible? Is it best just to "disable" those clients?

Also I have been only using 2 pools, the default pool and one other. I
know want to move to using 3 different pools. If I make the changes to
reflect the new pools, how difficult will it be to restore files that
have been being backed up to the current polls. What would be the best
way to migrate to the use of the 3 new pools, but still be able to
restore from the current tapes.

thanks

Hi Ron,

1. If you plan to delete the clients from Networker Configuration,
please ensure that you note down the Client ID for each client. When you
create a client, a client id is given for the client. If you want to restore
data from a client that has been deleted earlier, you need to recreate the
client and use the original client ID. If a new client gets assigned, you
cannot restore the data backed up using old client ID.
2. Data restoration does not depend on media pools while getting backed
up. The only issue is that if you relabel the tapes for going into new pool,
you will loose data on those tapes.

You can safely delete the client and reuse the license if required. The
information for the client in the media database is kept. If you later want to
do a restore you can add the client back if you have enough free licenses.

It doesn't matter which pool is used so need to worry about this.

Matt

Hi Ron,

I ran into the situation where I delete a client and then had to do a file restore.
Since the client didn't exist, I couldn't re-create it and Legato would not let me do the
restore.

I think I ended up adding the old client name as an alias to another client.
You don't really need to delete the old client name unless you are running low on client connections.
Hope this helps.

Guy
