 Antw: Server Upgrade
Hi Joel,
How many and what kind of HBA are You planning to use in Your new
v880?
We're using a Sun v880 as well, incl. 4 EMULEX LP9002 HBA's.
Our 9840A and 9940B drives inside our STK-Silo's got connected to our
SAN
and initially we need to keep track on placing the HBA in "suitable"
slots inside the v880.
Keep in mind: If You have more the only one HBA inside Your Server, You
need to keep
track on performance-balancing, some slots are connected to the same
internal BUS,
some are using different voltage; here's an overfiew:
PCI-Slot 0,1,2 and 3 are 32/64 Bit, 5.0V, internal BUS "B" and 33 MHz
PCI-Slot 4, 5 and 6 are 32/64 Bit, 5.0V, internal BUS "D" and 33MHz
PCI-Slot 7 and 8 are 32/64 Bit 3.3V, internal BUS "C" and 66MHz
So, better study Your available HBA and NIC-Card doku carefully to
avoid bottleneck's
h.t.h.
Kind Regards Thorsten

Hey Guys,
I'm getting ready to move from a Sun E450 w/ Solaris 2.6 to a Sun V880
w/ Solaris 9, and I'm trying to make sure I've got my steps down.
I'm not upgrading the software right now, so it is staying at 6.1.3
for
a month or so until I've got and kinks worked out of the hardware/OS
upgrade.
STK Silo with SAN attached 9940B drives. Index devices are also SAN
based.
1. nsrck
2. savegroup -O
3. remove the drives from networker(not sure if I should remove
the
silo)
4. change the zoning on the SAN(the indexes and drives are all
SAN
based)
5. change the new servers name/IP to the same as the old server
6. install Networker on the new server
7. add the drives(9940b) to the silo on the new server
8. nsrck
9. edit all the pools to use the drives
10. test some restores
Any input would be helpful.
Thanks,
Joel

Hey Thorsten,
I'm actually going to have 2 LP9002DC(dual channel) and 2 LP9002.
I've got them as balanced as possible on the V880. I'm sure there will
be some bottleneck at some point, but right now my major bottleneck is
the network.
Which slots did you put your cards in? I have the dual channel cards in
7 and 8 and the single channel cards in 0 and 1. The single channel
cards are not going to the 9940Bs and should not have near the traffic
as the DC cards so I _think_ the 33mhz speed shouldn't be a problem.
I'm fairly sure the cards support both 5.0v and 3.3v, but I'll check to
make sure... good thought. They are working right now, but I'm not sure
what problems I would run into if the voltage wasn't right...probably
not work at all.
Thanks!

Hey Joel,
We placed both, a HBA and a Gigabut NIC Card on Bus "B",
the same on Bus "D"
and two HBA on Bus "C"
So all HBA's are devided as much as possible to the bus-structure
to avoid traffic-jam.
Your choice looks fine as well, depending on the amount/type of
additional Cards You need, I would just recommend to re-org the
LP9002 and put one in Slot "0" and one in Slot "4" just if You want
to use a different Bus.
