Default Tape Request

Post Default Tape Request
I have a Daily Incremental Pool/Group that keeps requesting for Default
Tapes. Hale of the save Sets go to the correct Pool/Tape and the other half
requests Default Tape

It is an NT backup

c:\ and e:\ show as completed savesets and go to the correct tape but
System STATE:\ and SYSTEM DB:\ show as incomplete save sets and wait for a
default tape to be mounted.

What's wrong with this picture???

I have found that happens when if you have the pool set to only be able
to dump certain levels of backups.
If the volume it is trying to backup is attempting a level that is not
allowed for the given pool, it will
Go to the default pool.

I already checked/verified this setting and the 'Novell Pool' level is set=
from 'Full, level 1 to 9 and Inc.
=0D
I even tried the 'level' setting in the Group window to ensure that all=
clients in the group are on the same level, but still same problem.

Sid,

Even in an Incremental backup the SYSTEM STATE:\ and SYSTEM DB:\ save sets
are still backed up at level FULL. So if your pool doesn't allow level FULL
backups then those save sets will have to be backed up to a pool that does
allow that level. Also, indexes get backed up at level 9 in an incremental
backup so that can cause problems as well.

I find it works best for me to not fill in any of the backup levels for
pools.

Hope this helps.

I have seen this also. I have seen cases where all save sets from a
backup go to the specified pools, but just occasionally with no
configuration changes whatsoever an odd save set will insist on
requesting the Default pool. Then just as inexplicably it will work
correctly on the the next run of the group. Must be a bug.

Are you seeing SAVEFS failures in the Daemon.log for this client when
you run the backup? If so, then there is a patch for this, depending on
the version you are running. I ran into this issue in 7.1.2 and 7.2 on
Windows. LGTpa is LGTpa73655 for NW 7.2 and LGTpa68362 for NW 7.1.2.

I hope that might help if this is your situation.

Cheers,
Jim
