EMC Networker release cycle.

Post EMC Networker release cycle.
Hello all,

I went over the release cycle of Networker and found the following:

7.1 9/03
7.2 12/04 (15 months)
7.3 12/05 (12 months)
7.4 6/07 (18 months)
7.5 12/08 (18 months)
7.6 11/09 (11 months)

So, EMC had a new Networker release every 18 months or less. It has
been 23 months since 7.6 was out and 7.7/8.0 is not even announced or
rumored, so it will probably not be out before 2012. And I am not saying
that when new releases do arrive they bring some great new features.
This makes one wonder what is EMC doing with all the money we pay for
support.

Does anyone know when is Networker 7.7/8.0 going to be released ?

Post EMC Networker release cycle.
Yes. We definitely want a good version. It just seems like they are
taking their time with the next release and I am not sure they are
spending that on extra QA.

Most all of there efforts switched from Networker into their Avamar product. This was evident with the Exchange 2010 Support. Typically something that would get released 90 days after a product is released took them 1.5 years to release. And if you noticed during this same period Avamar had Exchange 2010 support. In fact our account rep tried to get us to switch from Networker to Avamar.

I have been questioning where Networker has been heading since that all started and how much effort is EMC going to keep putting into Networker based on these actions.

Someone said do we want a good vs bad product release, I think maybe something more transparent like a roadmap of what they have planned would make plenty of Networker customers happy.

Just my thoughts....

Thanks

Paul,

Have you contacted your local EMC account manager to ask to see a NetWorker roadmap?

Post EMC Networker release cycle.
It's evident that EMC lost their focus on NetWorker. late Exchange 2010
support and VADP support are some good examples on how EMC is neglecting
NetWorker customers. Actually EMC still talks about the Server 2008 DR
support and the VADP support as "new features", but those features should
had been out 18 months before it got released. Another example is the
security model as discussed in the NMM issue thread this week. And what
scares me the most with that issue, is that EMC does not consider it an
issue.

Can't the users of this community not unite in putting pressure on some
RFE's?

Post EMC Networker release cycle.
Speaking as the owner of this list, I encourage everyone to submit an RFE through PowerLink (there's a menu item for that purpose), then when you get the RFE number, post it here so others who have the same need can post on PowerLink's RFE feature and reference that same RFE number.

By the way, people at EMC do see these postings, but the formal way to ring EMC's bell to notify them of a need for a fix or a new feature is via PowerLink.

Post Client migrating to new hardware
Hi All:

I have a NetWorker client that will migrate to a new hardware.
It will keep the same name and IP address.
So basically it will be just the same client in a different hardware.
Not sure 100% how to proceed.

I know I can delete the old client peer info and delete the client
itself and just add the new client (with the same name).
My concern is about how you can recover the old client data if needed.
Any help will be much appreciated.

Note: Currently running NetWorker 7.6.2.4 sp2 Build 669

You won't really have to do anything. As long as the client has the same
DNS name and IP address, Networker will never know that anything has
changed. I've done this many times.

No need to delete the client at all. You may need to use nsradmin to
delete the NSR peer information, but that's pretty easy to look up.

(BTW - if you save the clientid, you can always re-create the client.
Since Networker actually goes by client id, and not client name, that's
how you keep history of old clients around. Just create a dummy client,
using the correct clientid. Then you can browse, recover, etc [within the
scope of your browse and retention policies, of course]).

Post EMC Networker release cycle.
There is a RFE for the NMM security issue, I just can't find it right now.

Also, someone from EMC replied there is a fix coming in a new release. However, I find that to be a problem. It should be a patch for this current release, not a new release.
