Microsoft Exchange 2003 backups
Author Message
Post Microsoft Exchange 2003 backups
We are just in the implementation stage of a Networker 7.1.3 install.
We have the Exchange Server Module. I am not the Exchange server
administrator, but I would like to be able to tell him what the best
approach is to back the server up(by mailbox or databases). What do I
need to specify in the Save Set window? We definitely need to be able
to restore messages quickly and do disaster recovery quickly.

We will be doing a disk backup and then staging to tape.

Thanks,

Jon

If you back up by Database, then recovery will be faster than if you were
to backup by mailbox. That would be of course in the case of DR where you
want the exhcnage DB recovered, as compared to a single mailbox.

Now if you backup to Disk and are keeping the retention time on disk say a
week or more and you are likely to recover mailbox objects within that
week, then mailbox backups to disk would be nice and then perhaps weekly
full backups of the exchange db for DR purposes.

The Admin guide has the various saveset names that you can specify for DB
and mailbox level backups.

Mailbox backups still (I think) require exporting to .pst files, which means
you need to have space available for them. We just do database backups.

Our setup is like this:

2 client setups. both have the same name one for the os, one for exchange.

save sets for the os client:

C:\
D:\
[any other partitions]
SYSTEM STATE:\
SYSTEM DB:\
SYSTEM FILES:\

save sets for the exchange db client:

MSEXCH:IS
MSEXCH:DS

and you have to fill in the backup command on that client setup page as
"nsrxchsv.exe"

Post Microsoft Exchange 2003 backups
Hello,
The best strategy for backuping Exchange 2003 will be do be able to protect your data against a
large data lost or a small data lost.
1. To protect against large data lost, you will need to backup :
- the Information Store
can be backuped up individually
- the Storage Groups, do not backup databases individually it is not recommeneded.
storage groups can be backed up individually if you want to achieve better performance
2. In case of small data lost, one mail for instance, if you only backup the storage group, you
will have to set up a recovery storage group (cf Microsoft docs), recover the storage group to the
recovery SG and recover the mail. Very Long and complex!
In order to protect against this small data lost and achieve better service level, you will need
to backup the mailboxes. And using the last version of the Networker Module you will be able to
restore a mail, a sub-folder, a note, a calendar.
Keep in mind, that this backup can be 4 to 8 times longer than the storage group backup

Best regards,
