NDMP recover without the NDMP device...

Post NDMP recover without the NDMP device...
I am told that both NetBackup and CommVault have utilities that allow you to recover their NDMP
backups without having the original NetApp device to use as a target (ie, you can recover the
data from a Windows or Linux system).

It is my belief that such a utility is not available for NetWorker. Am I correct, or is my
google-foo incredibly poor today?

Thanks,

I think you can really do cross platform recoveries on the same filer due the same Linux based OS. I remember that i have briefly tested this years ago. Of cours this applies exclusively to the data - the access rights will be lost.

I doubt that NDMP to standard OS file transfers are possible at all (with NetWorker). However, this might be possible is you use DSA backups for the NDMP data.

Carsten thank you for your response. The issue here is that the NetApp
has been removed from production and now we're being told that we have
to maintain the ability to recover data for the next six years. So,
we're trying to find a way to satisfy the stated requirement to continue
being able to recover the data without needing to keep the NetApp
running for the next six years.

Sounds like you are saying that NetWorker is not capable of doing that
for us.

I think this is true. NDMP backups can only be read on an NDMP
tapeserver. Typically an NDMP tapeserver runs on a NetApp, a Celerra, or
other filer. A NetWorker server or storage node is NOT an NDMP tapeserver.

DSA backups are a different form of NDMP backup where the NDMP stream is
passed over the network and encapsulated in a NetWorker save set, but
these are not compatible with normal NDMP backups.

If you can reinstate the NetApp for a while you might be able to clone
the long term NDMP backups to a DSA device, but I'm not 100% sure this
is possible.

Argh! I didn't describe what we had done correctly! We did use DSA
backups. So they are NetWorker encapsulated NDMP's that were written to
a storage node via the nsrdsa_save path (not a true NDMP backup that was
written to tape by the NetApp Filer).

Should we be able to recover the data via nsrdsa_recover without the
Filer as the final target? That is, assuming I could get someone to
tell me the parameters to call nsrdsa_recover with (a command that I
notice Preston noted on his blog in 2009 as one of the undocumented nsr*
commands) since that command has no documentation.

Thanks,
Frank
