networker 7.2 and library auto-load support
Author Message
Post networker 7.2 and library auto-load support
We have a quantum P4000 that has autoloading feature: whenever a tape is inserted into the
loadport and the tape will be moved from the loadport to the storage bin as soon as the loadport
is closed.

This is all nice and dandy, Legato networker, however, has no ideas of this happending. As a
result, the tapes are loaded but I have no idea where they went, short of re-inventorying the
entire library.

Is there a way for the library to notify/update the networker software of import/export events?
Sun support does not seem to think so. But I know for certain other backup software, such as
CommVault, does this like a breeze.

anybody has input on this? thanks!

I think that's what's expected. With barcodes in use, that should only
take a few seconds, except for the new tapes.

Does an inventory take a long time for you?

of import/export events?

No. Not when networker's not in control (as it would be with a deposit
or withdraw command).

If any tape library I use with NetWorker had an autoloading feature, I
would turn it off. Allowing your tape library to change the state of
itself seems like a recipe for trouble. If turning off the autoloading
feature isn't acceptable to you, then at least get in the habit of doing

nsrjb -C | grep ": "

so you at least know which slots are empty and are candidates for
receiving newly depositted tape cartridges. That way, you only have to
inventory just those slots after your tape library loads tapes ...
although if the tapes have never been used, an inventory is not necessary.

Inventorying all the slots does take a long time. That's not my complaint though. What I have been
doing is
(1) put the tapes in the load ports,
(2) use 'nsrjb -d' to load the tapes into availabe slots,
(3) find what slots those tapes went into (with a nsrjb -C command and grep *),
(4) run 'nsrjb -I' and 'nsrjb -L' to lable them.

Why do I have to go through this? Our windows side uses CommVault for backup with same type of
tape library, they never have to go through this. The only step they do is to load the tapes into
load port, and all new loads will show up on the software side.

Okay, that wasn't at all how I understood your first post.

Yes, since depositing the tape is under Networker control, networker
does know what slots they went in.

(3) find what slots those tapes went into (with a nsrjb -C command and grep *),
(4) run 'nsrjb -I' and 'nsrjb -L' to lable them.

So networker does know what slots they're in. They're visible with
'nsrjb -C' as you mention.

If they're not labeled, yes you need to label them. Either that or you
need to be running with Auto Media Management so that Networker will
auto-label blank tapes.

Why do I have to go through this? Our windows side uses CommVault for backup with same type of
tape library, they never have to go through this. The only step they do is to load the tapes into

Auto Media Management should do so. You need to be aware of possible
problems and the limitations of this setting though.

Is there a way for the library to notify/update the networker software
of import/export events?

Note that the software didn't need to be notified. It controlled the
insertion (via nsrjb -d), so it already knew where the tape was, and in
which slot it was located.
