Haha - I know Carsten and I can promise you that he is not "new", At
least not new to NetWorker. He has been doing NetWorker for about as
long as I have.  That's why he can make such valuable contributions. I'm
glad he's joined the forum.

Sorry; I meant new(ish) to this community.  I very definitely guessed that
Carsten is not new to NetWorker.

Anyone see any harm in encouraging such experts to move to the mailing
list? I must say, as a Gmail user (and far, far from the only one
here), losing threading context absolutely hurts the discussion. Tim
hit the nail on the head, it's hard not to discriminate against forum
users when their replies are so hard to process.

Ultimately it's up to each person for how they want to participate, if at
all. We're lucky to have people like Carsten, Davina, and Preston follow
and participate in any form. If they've chosen a particular format, then
that's their choice.

Selfishly, I would love to have more of the forum posters like Carsten
switch to the mailing list, because it makes my life easier and it makes
it easier for me to participate as well, but in the end I'm happy to
have them participate in any format.

When this type of discussion came up last time, IIRC Curtis mentioned
something about having a note on the forum, so that people that post there
realize that the forum is gatewayed to the mailing list, and encouraging
people to "quote text when replying" for the benefit of the mailing list
subscribers.

As a funny aside, I just realized that today is the 16th (!) anniversary
for my subscription to the predecessor of this mailing list! Maybe it's
time for me to switch to the forums! Wink

That would be the predecessor's predecessor then?

Smile You are correct (and pedantic). I was talking about the iphase list.

Tim

We discussed this in September 2007. I could not find any archives of
the iphase list, so cannot tell exactly when I first subscribed or
posted. I suspect it was 1997, but that is less than 16 years ago, so
you're ahead of me.

I have a saved post of yours, *not* under a nom de guerre, from August
30th of 1996, to the iphase list. You were at MCL at the time. There
may have been earlier ones, but that's the earliest I have.

Ah yes - that was the first place I encountered NetWorker (4.1.2). It
was all new and exciting back then. That company does not even exist now
under that name - swallowed up by its multi-national parent company.

As regards the pen name - it was verboten for Legato employees and
contractors to post to the list under their own names except for a
couple of designated spokespersons. Thus I have used a couple of other
identities over the years. I sometimes still do work for EMC but AFAIK
the rule has now been relaxed. However I see no reason to change - I am
known as Davina on this list, and many people who know me (from inside
and outside EMC) know who I am. It doesn't take a lot to work out from
the name that Davina and I are the same person. I am sure that Carsten
will have worked it out, especially bearing in mind the language of
Davina's surname.

Interesting. I wasn't aware of that policy. The very first response
I received to the question I asked on Nov 14th 1995 was from a Legato
employee (Paul Zuhorski) responding from his Legato address. Back then,
the list was reply to sender (rather than the list), but I summarized all
the responses back to the list, as was the custom. I hope I didn't get
him in trouble! Smile

In any case, 16 years later I still find this to be extremely valuable,
and I'm thankful to Stan for hosting it after the iphase and meitca days.
I'm also thankful to the many, many people that have shared tips, tricks,
and even frustrations over the years. Even if there isn't always an
answer, sometimes it's enough to know you're not alone.

Post NMC backup and licensing question
måndag 14 november 2011 21:05:52 skrev Michael Leone:
Of course a machine must have the NW client software installed to be
able to be backed up by NW.

So could it just be that you are trapped by standard NW licensing? -
If you run NMC on the NW server, then no additional client license
would be necessary.

(BTW - it would *really* be helpful is you would quote back what you are
replying to, thanks)

Agree on that. Actually keeping the thread info would be even better.

Best
