Setting up Windows Dedicated Storage Nodes with Linux Networ
Author Message
Post Setting up Windows Dedicated Storage Nodes with Linux Networ
I'm hoping some of you can show an old Networker dog some new tricks...I
am unfamiliar with the setup of shared drives and storage nodes.

I'm converting a standard Networker installation into one that will be
sharing drives in an autochanger over a SAN with some dedicated
networker storage nodes. The Networker server (Network Edition, 7.1.1
but can be upgraded if necessary) driving the autochanger is Linux - the
storage nodes (4) are Windows (running Exchange). The Autochanger is a
PV-132T with two SDLT320 drives.

I've got the licenses for DDS and the Dedicated Storage Nodes intalled.

It appears from the documentation that I need to run jbconfig, and will
need to supply the paths that each of the storage nodes sees the drives
as - can someone give me an example of how this would look for a windows
storage node?

Also in the manual it mentions sharing the autochanger - and that
jbconfig would prompt me differently. Should I be following the
directions for the drive sharing, or the autochanger sharing? I think
the latter, but jbconfig doesn't prompt me as it seems to show it should.

Any help with this is mucho appreciated.

Also, give only two drives, and 5 storage nodes (including the current
server and its clients), will I have scheduling issues? Should I stagger
them?

Brian,
Just follow and answer the jbconfig questions.
After the initial jukebox selection answer yes to the shared drive
question.
You will the be prompted for each logical path of each physical drive.
You should terminate the answers for each physical drive with a blank
line.
Your answers will be:
/dev/nst0
host1:\\.\Tape0
Host2:\\.\Tape0
...
You should use the inquire command on each host to find out the logical
drive names and correlate them by their serial number.
Except the multiple answers it is quite straight forward.

Yes, I see now that the "autochanger sharing" option is not what I want.

One other thing I'm not clear on from the docs. I can set up the drives
for sharing (once they tell me the device names on the Windows nodes).
How do I back them up? Do I just set them up as clients and they will
automatically use their own drive paths?

You first have to define them as clients.
Then for those clients in the "storage node" field you make sure that
the clients own name is the first or only entry.

Post Setting up Windows Dedicated Storage Nodes with Linux Networ
Couple things to watch for:

- If you intend to share tapes between the server and storage nodes,
make sure the block size on all systems is set to be the same.

- Since the Windows servers have access to the tape drives, make sure
that the Removable Storage service is disabled (Win2000, not sure how to
accomplish the same thing in 2003). This service will try to get a
status from the tape drives at various times (at reboot, etc.). If it
finds them in an unknown state, it will rewind the tape. If another
system is doing a backup, Windows will consider that an unknown state.
When the tape gets rewound during a backup, data is overwritten.

- Since you are running 7.1.1, you might want to consider enabling the
JB setting "verify label on unload" (you'll need to view details to get
this setting). When a tape is overwritten, the tape label is wiped out.
Having this flag enabled will help you find out when this is happening.
With this setting enabled, NW will write messages to the log about not
being able to find the tape label. =20

- If you have NW support, you might want to browse the online knowledge
base. I vaguely remember finding a few more helpful hints there when I
was setting up our environment.

Good luck.
Teresa
