Mario -

When posting such problems, please include the context of the attempt,
so that we may better perceive the situation...
Was this the first ever attempt to start this server? If not, what
has changed - particularly across the restart? What exactly was the
command used to start it, and from what directory location?

Your initial posting referred an empty dsmserv.dsk file, in /opt/
tivoli/tsm/server/. But, the server is seemingly trying to use the
dsmserv.dsk file that is in the actual server directory, /opt/tivoli/
tsm/server/bin/.

I would:
Verify the existence of the dsmserv.dsk file in the true server
directory, and that it has proper permissions on it.
'cd' into the true server directory, and perform the start there.
Beyond that, the 212 message might result from a filled Recovery Log -
which gets us back to understanding context.

Hi Richard,

Sorry about the mess....there is only one dsmserv.dsk file and it is located at /opt/tivoli/tsm/server/bin

There are no files at /opt/tivoli/tsm/server, only directories:

tsmlinux:/opt/tivoli/tsm/server # ls -la
total 11
drwxr-xr-x 7 root root 176 May 11 2005 .
drwxr-xr-x 6 root root 176 Mar 13 2008 ..
drwxr-xr-x 3 root root 2488 Jun 7 13:24 bin
drw-rw-rw- 2 root root 496 Oct 29 2004 license
drwxr-xr-x 3 root root 344 May 11 2005 scripts
drwxr-xr-x 3 root root 72 Nov 4 2004 webhelp
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 8344 Nov 4 2004 webimages

As for starting TSM, the server suddenly appeared as DOWN on our monitoring tool. When checked, the machine was hung somehow and had to be restarted. When coming back, dsmserv.rc failed to start TSM.

After that I just tried to start dsmserv on foreground...to see what was going on......that´s it!

Mario

Your .dsk file appears to be 0 bytes. I think it needs to be bigger.

In earier versions you could create a new dsmserv.dsk and add a
path/name to one known log- or dbvolume.
This will allow you to start TSM server and recreates dsmserv.dsk with
all values.

Also, can I recreate the DB and RecLog references inside dsmserv.dsk using an editor (vi) and try to start TSM?? Should that work?

Thanks

Mario

In earier versions you could create a new dsmserv.dsk and add a path/name to one known log- or dbvolume.
This will allow you to start TSM server and recreates dsmserv.dsk with all values.

I am getting the following error when trying to start dsmserv on a
Linux box:

Tivoli Storage Manager for Linux/i386
Version 5, Release 2, Level 2.0
[....]
The /opt/tivoli/tsm/server directory shows 2 dsmserv.dsk files:

-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 0 Jun 1 11:09 dsmserv.dsk
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 970 Oct 4 2008
dsmserv.dsk.200810052302
[...]

Try to restore "dsmserv.dsk" from your latest Backup.

The TSM server apparently re-writes this file on each startup, however the contents normally does not change.
