Erroneous files in client log directory

Post Erroneous files in client log directory
Hello Storage Folk,

I can't seem to find any documentation or anyone else reporting this files being created in the log directories.

16/07/2008 14:09 3,303 dsmerror.log
16/07/2008 14:10 31,912 dsmsched.log
16/07/2008 14:10 16,350 dsmwebcl.log
16/06/2008 21:56 22 s2i4
30/06/2008 21:41 22 s2ig
20/06/2008 21:58 22 s2io
10/07/2008 01:21 22 s2j4
14/07/2008 01:19 22 s2j8
22/06/2008 21:18 22 s2jc
18/06/2008 21:50 22 s2k0
16/07/2008 01:31 22 s2kk
15/07/2008 01:42 22 s2l0

We've all seen the change in the way the scheduler updates the log files (seems to write to temp file before appending to the actual dsmsched.log file itself) but my customer is complaining that this machine is falling over in the middle of the night, and I need to disprove TSM as being a cause. I can't figure out why these files are lying around here - having checked their contents they contain messages like:

EXECUTE PROMPTED 1116

And

EXECUTE PROMPTED 1179

What are they? MS return codes?

Anyone seen this kind of behaviour in the past?

Cheers,
Matthew

Is there a schedlogmax defined, or any trace flag that may be configured
on the client?

What ID is the client running under, does it have the privileges to
remove temp files it may be able to create?

Post Erroneous files in client log directory
Hi Ian,

(what happened on Sunday??)

Nothing of the sort - no traces, full privileges - I should have stated that it is a W2K3 client.

If you watch a windows log directory after starting the dsmcad, you will see these files get created and deleted very quickly..

Cheers,
Matthew

See Client Acceptor Daemon
in http://people.bu.edu/rbs/ADSM.QuickFacts

where I summarize the nature of those files. I'm surprised to see
them in that directory, and lingering.

I don't see how a few tiny files can cause a computer system to be
"falling over". The customer has to do some actual looksee into the
failure condition.

Post Erroneous files in client log directory
In the Windows application log, is there any evidence of the acceptor
daemon crashing, and possibly orphaning the files? What version of TSM
is the client?

Thanks Richard,

If I had left the number off the search string QuickFacts would have appeared!..

The crashes seem to be happening at the same time those erroneous files were written, so they want to eliminate TSM as a cause. Although I totally agree with you - how can a few tiny file writes cause a crash?

Cheers,
Matthew

Well... it *is* Windows. Wink

Less facetiously: If TSM has been configured this way for some time
and the system instability is recent, they need to review system
change records, where a Service Pack or patch installation or local
change may underlie the situation. Such temporal isolation may help
resolution.
