Post intermittent errors on -snapdiff backups
Customer has a Netapp; trying to implement -snapdiff backups on several large shares.
Having intermittent failures that make no sense to me.
Running the backup with:

dsmc -snapdiff -optfile=blah.opt

blah.opt contains:
..
domain /filer/sharepath1 /filer/sharepath2 etc

We can get the first backup with -snapdiff, and usually the second.
Then at some point, we start getting

ANS2831E Incremental by snapshot difference
cannot be performed on 'volume-name' as
it is not a NetApp NFS or CIFS volume.

Obviously it IS a NetApp volume as we get one or more snapdiff backups before the problem starts.
(And we can log in to the filer with the same credentials, and we can map a drive letter to the share.)
I'm not sure whether this is a NetApp issue or a Windows/CIFS/network issue that makes -snapdiff lose its brains.

Anybody seen this behavior before?
Any suggestions where to look next?
Thanks!
W

Hi Wanda,
Is your NetApp a vFiler? If yes it will not work until NetApp implement the SnapDiff API to the vFilers.
I have talk to NetApp a couple of times and it seams like they maybe going to implement the Snapdiff API in the end of Q4.

No, not a vfiler.
And we do get some snapdiffs. It's just intermittent failrues.

I had similar problems when using snapdiff. The fix was to have a pre-exec
map all of the volumes you wanted to backup. It doesn't matter what the
drive letters are as you carry one backing up the UNC.

Worth a try if you're not ding it already.
