New Tape Library

Post New Tape Library
Hi all

My favorite forum is required once again for its invaluable knowledge.

I am upgrading my tape library (3583) to a TS3200.

Runs on Linux (small satellite site) SUSE 4 on an IBM xServer i686. TSM
5.5

I have a 2 port FC HBA card in it.

I really want confirmation on the best method to switch over to the new
library.

Should I perform the following?

1. Halt TSM

2. Connect New Library

3. Confirm Connection to OS

4. Create new device class to new library

5. Start TSM

6. Configure new paths to drives and library

7. delete old library and its paths

8. checkin all tapes from old library as private

I remember somewhere there is a problem linking the copy pool tapes to
the new library.

Any help/suggestions would be appreciated.

The way you phrase this suggests that you will be moving tape drives
from your current library to the new library. The suggested sequence
below is based on that assumption.

1.Connect new library.
2.Verify that OS can communicate with new library.
3.Define the new library and its associated path.
3.Quiesce all TSM activity that uses tape drives.
4.Ensure that any volumes in drives are dismounted.
5.Update status of tape drives and associated paths to 'online=no'.
6.Record status (scratch or private) of volumes in old library.
7.Check out the volumes from the old library.
8.Update status of path to old library to 'online=no'.
9.Update tape device classes to refer to the new library.
10.Physically move the tape drives to the new library.
11.Define the tape drives and associated paths in the new library.
12.Check in volumes to the new library, giving each volume that same
status recorded for it in step 6.
13.Once you are sure that the new libary is functioning properly,
delete the old paths, drives, and library.

Post New Tape Library
And actually, the steps to define the volumes in the new library is even
simpler. TSM knows what's what as far as volumes go so you can issue
the following three commands to get the old volumes checked into the new
library:

Tsm> audit library libname checklabel=barcode
Tsm> checking libvol libname search=yes checklabel=barcode
status=scratch
Tsm> checking libvol libname search=yes checklabel=barcode
status=private

The order of the two checkin commands is critical. If you do the
status=private first, all your scratch tapes will be marked as private
and you will have to update each one individually back to scratch.

These three commands in this order can be thought of as a library
synchronization process.

Hi All ,

Im new to this forum ..I have similar kind of situation where we had to replace DELL libraries with IBM 3584ATL to windows HOST.My onsite person had pluged OFF the old library .... And Plugged in the new library (3584ATL) ... And device driver for 3584atl has been overwritten the previous DELL library ...We are able to configure the new library and drives of the new one ...and backups are migrating to tapes of 3584atl...but we have a problem moving the tapes from old library to new library in TSM level ...
It shows in private status with last_use as NULL for few tapes which are already checked out ...

For other tapes which are not checked out from libv with old library ...
Shows 2 entries in the libvol
..
my question is ..how to checkin the used tapes of old library to new one , and same data need to be accessed by the new libr when the old library is fully plugged off..

Greetings,
You don't say for sure, but I presume the same model of tape
drives are in use in both tape libraries, LTO3 for example.

1) Delete the old Library from TSM. To do this, delete the:
- drive paths
- drives
- library path
- library
In that order.
When you do this, the old library inventory is deleted.

2) Pause the new library. Use the touchscreen on the library to do
this.
3) Open the doors, and put the tapes into the new library. When you
close the doors, wait until the library gets to Ready status.
4) Using the Web site provided for the library, or the touchscreen on
the front of the library, perform a full inventory of the library.
5) Check the new tapes into the new library using TSM admin commands:
checkin libv ibm3584 search=yes checkl=barc status=scratch
checkin libv ibm3584 search=yes checkl=barc status=private
(assuming "ibm3584" is your library name)
6) Issue "q actlog" to monitor the progress of these, and wait until
complete. A "q libv" should show the tapes now in the new library.

7) Use the "update devclass" command to update the device class for the
device classes that pointed to your old library so the now point to your
new library.

I don't think I have left anything out.

Hello

You use "CHECKOut LIBVolume" with remove=no and checkl=no

Hi,
Forgive me if I am being dense, but this doesn't make sense to me. If
you deleted the drive paths, the drives, the library path, and then the
library, the library should be gone, along with it's inventory.

If you do a 'q libvol' and you still see tapes in the original library,
then you didn't really delete it.

If the library has actually been deleted, you can't do a 'checkout
libvol' because the syntax requires the library name, and the library
doesn't exist anymore, right?
