TSM support for VADP
Author Message
Post TSM support for VADP
From the TSM 6.2 announcement letter:
In addition, Tivoli Storage Manager V6.2 and Tivoli Storage Manager Extended Edition V6.2 leverage the VMware vStorage application programming interface (API) for file-level backup and recovery.

Can someone from IBM confirm that this is the same as what VMware is calling VADP (VMware API for Data Protection)?

Also, will VADP support be provided in any earlier versions of TSM, or must we upgrade to 6.2 to get this support?

Thank you.
..Paul

Hi Paul,
VADP is supported in TSM 6.2. It is also called vStorage API as my understanding.

Earlier version of TSM is only supporting the old VCB backup and not vStorage/VADP.

Maybe StorServe are supporting VADP?

Hi Wanda,
You are not required to run 6.2 server to be able to run 6.2 client, but you will probably loss a couple of functions such client-side dedup and WinSxS Inc forever.

Will a proxy server still be required with VM Image backup using TSM or with the use of the VADP will it read directly from vCenter and know where to find the vmdk's (VM'S) to snapshot?

Will TSM also allow for disk to tape (Direct to Target) backup or will be disk-to-disk-target, like it is when using VCB?

Where is IBM's configuration documentation for setting up TSM to work with VADP? I can't seem to find any documents for configuring and setting up using VADP. The Step by Step install.

I am running TSM Server 5.5.3 with Clients running (5.5.x - 6.2.x). My goal is to perform Image only of the VM's and then let the Client perform file level backups and restores through the GUI.

Thanks,
Boltergiest

Hi Steven,

this is a link to IBM and compatibility between TSM and (VCB/VADP)
You can find you information here : http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/tsminfo/v6r2/index.jsp?topic=/com.ibm.itsm.client.doc/r_techchg_client_vmware_620.html

This link is about new functionnality on TSM 6.2 and you can jump on the other explanation (How to make backup ...)

VDAP is a VMWare functionality, if you want configure it, you must go at VMWare ! Smile

For save à 5.5 Client you must use VCB and for 6.2 you can use VDAP.

Best regards,

Yann MEUNIER

Thanks,

I already read that VMWare document. I am not trying to write my own backup solution. I got most of my questions answered by IBM TSM folks and it looks like there are a couple options I can go with that I will need to test.

1) VM client with TSM loaded can perform it's own backups image and file level. This might remove the our VM team from the equation and allow the customer to configure the TSM Client (v6.2.x) to perform the image and file level backups to meet their own needs.

2) let our VMWare proxy server run the image backups and our VM Admins manage the images and recovery for the client.

I like option 1. Razz But it still will require the VM Admin to run the converter process in either case.

Steve
