Bkup failed - "Cannot gain network access to client mac

Post Bkup failed - "Cannot gain network access to client mac
Some of the NetVault backups are failed due to "Cannot gain network access to client machine"

The client machines were continuous connected and disconnected ( the client status of the machine colored in red).

The physical servers is ok but i don't know why the connection to the client machines keep reconnect when i try to rerun the failed backups.. Sad

Thanks in advance if anyone can help me on this issue.

Hi there,

You may be having network connectivity problems with the affected clients or perhaps there is a firewall between the NetVault server and these clients.

If you are using NetVault version 8 or above, you have to tell NetVault when a client is located behind a firewall (Client Management -> Right-click on client -> Outside Firewall), you will then need to launch the Configurator on both the server and the clients and specify the communication port range in all the fields (e.g 20031-20081). You then need to make sure that the this port range (TCP & UDP) is open bidirectionally on the firewall.

I hope this helps

Hi Booker,

Thanks for your fast respone.

It's so weird that the servers back to normal themselves. What we suspected, the problem occur becoz of the upgrade of the McAfee Antivirus in both server and clients.

The incremental backups for this week is all completed.

Now the Full backups is being monitored.

Will update the Full backup status again.

Thanks again.

hi,

Again, this issue happened and even worse and urgent this time.

All of our NetVault backup clientsˇŻ backup suddenly failed during
half way of the backups with error message ˇ°Cannot gain network
access to client machine.ˇ± ( Some of the backup run completely few
minutes before the failure).

After we have tried to reboot the NetVault server, the NetVault
Client Management take longer time than usual for scanning clients
(more than 5 minutes) as I just start the application.

Some of the backup failed to run after the reboot with the error
shown below:
1) "Cannot gain network access to client machine."
2) " Fatal error: Unable to establish machine on which to run job. "

In Client Management, pop-up message "The remote machine is unavailable" was shown as I check access to the clients.

Appreciate for your response on this issue.

Thank you in advance.

Did you figure this out yet? Bakbone uses a wide range of ports and changes port pairs continously during the backup. you can try and restrict the ports in the bakbone manager. I ran into this issue before at yahoo. On my phone now, if you need more help, message me and ill respond back when im at my computer. Cheers!

hi,

Some of the backup finished completely few minutes before the failure of other backups.

The backup are failed suddenly on the half way of backup and we do nth changes to the backup server/clients setting.

The network setting is handle by another team and will consult with network team re the issue.

At the 1st place, do you know any situation may cause the issue?

Bakbone uses a large range of ports during backups, if your network team has firewall rules which are restricting some of that range, then you could have a situation where some backups succeed and some fail depending if they drifted into that restricted range or not. If you don't want to bother your network team much, just find out what the unrestricted range is and configure bakbone to work within that range. I ran into a very similar issue before and I believe the solution we chose was to tighten the range of ports that bakbone uses.

Cheers,

-Steve

hi,

The ports are not be restricted.

Have tried to recreate the machine.dat and change the hosts file in the machines which got error, but only 1 of them back to normal another 2 were remain the same(total 3 clients have the issue), "The remote machines is unreachable" was shown once we Check Access in the Client Management tab.

(All 25 clients, 2 clients got the issue, both are in same switch/VLAN )

Note: 2 machines are the cluster node for 3 virtual clients.

I fixed a problem last week be unplugging the ethernet cord and
plugging it back into a diff port. Not sure if it'll help you, but
worth a shot.
