Post netvault status "waiting for media"
Hi,

This is my first question to the list.
I am new to backup area.

My query is as follows.
Currently I am using NetVault client 'Version 8.53 Build 4 Release R2011JAN25-HALO' on my Fedora Core 13 machine.

Using nvgui I am scheduling a backup job by connecting to the NDMP server on my test machine (say a.b.c.d). This test machine also have a standalone tape drive "IBM ULT3580-TD1 25D4 6811304109" attached to it.

However, when I submit a new backup job, in the 'job management' window I can only see "Waiting for media" status and the job never proceeds.

I checked the current stage of NDMP server which is listening on a.b.c.d:10000. It is waiting in a poll() call expecting some input from the client (NetVault).

Does anybody know cause of this status message and whether I need to do any extra configuration on NetVault or on my NDMP server or to tape?

Before starting the backup job I had checked the status of tape using the command :
$ mt -t /dev/nst0 status
and it showed me :
BOT ONLINE IM_REP_EN

Can anybody please help me in resolving this?

Regards,
Girish

Hi Girish,

This could be problem related to wrong GROUP ID of media mentioned on the Target Options of Backup Job.

Please do verify those target settings on the backup job.....

Hi Siv,
Thanks for the reply.

While creating a new backup job I am using :

Target --> Device Options --> Any Device
and
Target --> Media Options --> Target Media By --> Any not in a group
Target --> Media Options --> Label Media --> Automatically label blank media (check box is checked for this)
Target --> Media Options --> Reuse Media --> Any

But still getting the same message.
Is this a correct configuration or Is there any other configuration to be tried?

Regards,
Girish

Hi ,

Here is the correct Target TAB info for New Backup Job.

Target --> Device Options --> Any Device - This is fine
and
Target --> Media Options --> Target Media By --> Any - This is corrected one
Target --> Media Options --> Label Media --> Automatically label blank media (check box is checked for this) - This is fine
Target --> Media Options --> Reuse Media --> Any - This is fine

Give a try on this and let me know...

It still gives me same message, "Waiting for media".

Last conversation between the NetVault client and the ndmpd (server) is as follows :

May 10 13:05:14 [20257] NDMP_CONFIG_GET_CONNECTION_TYPE request <<< w.x.y.z
sequence: 10
reply_sequence: 0
time_stamp: 1305033152
message_type: REQUEST
message_code: 0x102
error_code: NDMP_NO_ERR

May 10 13:05:14 [20257] NDMP_CONFIG_GET_CONNECTION_TYPE reply >>> w.x.y.z
sequence: 11
reply_sequence: 10
time_stamp: 1305032714
message_type: REPLY
message_code: 0x102
error_code: NDMP_NO_ERR
error: NDMP_NO_ERR
addr_types_len: 2
addr_types[0]: NDMP_ADDR_LOCAL
addr_types[1]: NDMP_ADDR_TCP

Machine (w.x.y.z) is an FC13 machine with NetVault installed on it.
ndmpd is running on some other machine a.b.c.d to which tape drive is connected.
