Did you list /media/cdrecorder in your /home/exclude-list
exclusions?

I did not have it in there. I inserted it and tried again but the result
was the same. At least it looked like the same error message and
traceback. I didn't check it in detail. Any other thoughts?

Are you sure it's exactly the same? It really looks like rdiff-backup
is trying to list your /media/cdrecorder directory, getting a strange
error, and then bailing out.
