What would it cost to fund development rdiff-backup to the point where
it could run, for production use, on Windows? How long will it take?

- Must run on 2k/XP/2003, prior versions would be cool but are not required
- rdiff-backup running under cygwin is okay, but a standalone version is
preferred.
- think about a graphical interface for setting up and scheduling jobs
for stage two.

I need a number I can bring to meetings for discussion purposes. Funding
is not available for this development right now, but it could be if I
can convince my colleagues this is a worthwhile endeavour.

You can reply directly to me, to the mailing list, or call me at
(867) 667-8133.

regards,

we have just finished a version.
it still has some problems that will be sorted out in the coming weeks.
the web interface works really well now, and the gui schedules jobs,
creates jobs, manages restores through the webinterface etc. pretty much
similar interface to ntbackup, with some modifications. Its gots only a
few bugs - the restoring relys on the web interface and some soap magic.
You would either have to get the web interface off us as well (which
would be fine) or add in a restore interface. Only problem is
rdiff-backup on cygwin can't write back to windows atm. This is due to
some bugs which I am confident can be resolved when Ben puts more time
into it again.
If you want to call me on (australia) +61 0413 022 143 I would be happy
to talk about it. We can arrange some licensing deal - the client we
developed it for is interested in selling it off as well as using it for
his own offsite backup business.

thanks

David,

I think you once said that your customer was not wanting to publish
their extensions under the GPL. I assume many of the extensions you
have made are not covered by the GPL, but I suspect many are. (ie.
derived works are covered. GUI's that simply invoke executables are not
considered are not considered derived works.)

IANAL, but my understanding of the GPL is that your first customer can
use your derived works internally in a proprietary manner and can even
sell services based upon them.

If they want to sub-license the derived work to third parties, they must
sub-license it under the GPL. That doesn't mean that can't sell that
sub-license, but it does mean the sub-licensee can do with the source
code for the "derived work" whatever they wany, including publishing it
on the Internet for the world to see and use.

this is encouraging news!

I will try and schedule something. Won't be for a couple of days though,
big deadline coming up.

We can arrange some licensing deal - the client we developed it for
is interested in selling it off as well as using it for his own
offsite backup business.

I'm not interested in anything which is not Open Source Definition
compliant. I'm tired of being left in the lurch by companies that fold
or push their products in directions which are incompatible with our needs.

cheers,
