I've just checked with all three nameservers responsible for stanford.edu,
they don't know about rdiff-backup.stanford.edu either...?!

maybe we can go a bit overboard and have some mirrors? Smile
I'm in AU, you are in DE. a site in USA would probably be useful too :)

lets wait and see what Ben has to say about it.
If its just a DNS stuff up, it should be able to be fixed pretty soon.
In the long term I think rdiff-backup.org makes sense.

Interesting. Seems to be back up, the other two stanford.edu nameservers are
behaving normal again, too.

Thank you for the generous offer. It makes a lot of sense, especially
since I hope to leave Stanford this year, and I'm not sure how long
they will let me keep rdiff-backup.stanford.edu. So really it's a
good thing you mentioned this, otherwise we might be having this
"where is the rdiff-backup homepage" discussion some months from now,
and then the problem wouldn't be a temporary DNS failure.

So, how about we take Dave up on his offer? What should I do on my
end? I don't know much about http, is when a page has changed part of
the protocol? If so maybe he could just mirror the current page and
no change would be necessary on the rdiff-backup.stanford.edu end.

If this kind of one-way passive mirroring is too inefficient, it may
be time for me to move the rdiff-backup page to Savannah, which should
be stable long-term. Then Dave and/or Mark could use CVS to mirror,
which presumably would be efficient enough.

Again, much thanks for the hosting offers.

I have taken the liberty of ordering rdiff-backup.org.
I have put your name as the owner Ben, but lacking address details put
my company's postal address there instead.
I can perfom mirroring using wget -m easily enough.
it only takes a little while.
At present I might only mirror once a week or so.
Then if ever your hosting is lost, you can have ftp or ssh access to our
server for hosting.
Our server is on a major Australian backbone, and I trust everyone finds
it fast enough - speak now if not :)

thanks

dave
