ERROR: /bin/cp failed. Perhaps this is not GNU cp?

Post ERROR: /bin/cp failed. Perhaps this is not GNU cp?
Hi all,

We have been using rsnapshot for the last three months and it has been
working really well. We have an ubuntu 8.04 server that we are backing
up via a cifs mount to a Seagate Blackarmor NAS. For the last few days
the backups have not been working and I am seeing the following in the
error logs:

/bin/cp -al /media/backup/daily.0 /media/backup/daily.1
[22/Jun/2011:18:52:17] /usr/bin/rsnapshot daily: ERROR: /bin/cp failed.
Perhaps this is not GNU cp?
[22/Jun/2011:18:52:18] /usr/bin/rsnapshot daily: ERROR: Error!
cp_al("/media/backup/daily.0/", "/media/backup/daily.1/")
[22/Jun/2011:18:52:18] rm -f /var/olma/rsnapshot.pid

I have done a google search but can't find much there.

The config file has not changed at all. We are running rsnapshot 1.2.9-1.

Anyone who can suggest what the problem might be?

Thanks

Regards

Joakim

Have a look at the stderr output from rsnapshot.

If you are running rsnapshot manually it should just come up on your
terminal. (Even if you don't normally run rsnapshot manually you can
run it once manually from a shell.)

If you are running rsnapshot from cron, the stdout and stderr output
is normally emailled to root (or whatever user you are running as).

There will probably be a error visible there, for example disk full.

Ok, so when running it manually, I get the following error:

I can't delete the folder and nor can I chown or chmod the files. What I
really don't get is why this would happen. Looking back at daily.2 and
further, the file ownerships and permissions are correct.

Looks like a broken file system. Which file system are you using?
Do you have looked at dmesg or /var/log/?
If logs doesnt show hardware issues I would do fsck and badblocks.

I am using cifs to mount the NAS on my ubuntu 8.04 server.

I have checked all the logs, and they don't show any filesystem errors.
The web frontend for the NAS is not showing any errors on the disks either.

Guess an fsck is the way to go.

Any other ideas?

IMO first you should find out if this Problem happens via cifs only or
also directly on the NAS box.
Can you access that broken dir via other protocols (ftp, ssh, nfs, ...)?

Sometimes I saw such strange directory listings on NFS clients when
server went down and client didn't umounted it before. In this case FS
was not broken on server and just umounting/mounting on client solved
the prob.
