any clues as to what problem might cause this ?Im backing up my wifes' windows machine by mounting the windows share on my linux server and then performing the backup from /mnt/backups/.......

Some files that existed at the start of the backup weren't there when
the backup reached them. Pretty common with any form of temporary
files.

If they only vanish: no problem.
On my windows machines some files can't be copied from rsnapshot because
Windows holds them opened. Ugly.

That's normal. All it means is that between rsync scanning the volume
to find what there is to back up, and it actually doing the backup, some
files got deleted/renamed.
