I found that even though I specified cmd_cp command to tell rsnapshot to use hardlink whenever possible, it uses hard link between different back up copies, but not the first copy, i.e., I have at least one full back (doubled my current data size).

Is there any reason rsnapshot is not using hard link when it makes the first backup, i.e., a hard link from source data to the backup copy when the backup is on the same file system as the original? Given it is hard link, we are not any at higher risk then using regular copy, no?

"rsnapshot" knows nothing about other files (outside the
"snapshot_root") in the target partition, and it doesnt't search wether
there is another file (outside the "snapshot_root") on the target
partition which may be hard linked.

And I won't have another behaviour (per default) with my backups.

If you want to hardlink several backups from different "rsnapshot_root"
directories then try "hardlink" from Dag Wieers:

If your original file is corrupted, you can still use your backup, if its
NOT a hardlink...

That's just because it assumes you don't want to do that. I think this
is a valid assumption for the vast majority of users, because:

* almost everyone will be backing up to another physical device and
another filesystem;
* even if you're backing up to the same filesystem, you want a
*backup*, to protect you against things like a disk sector becoming
unreadable. Using hard links like you propose would not do that, and
all you'd have is, effectively, a version control system.

Because a 2nd hardlink to the original file is not a backup. A backup,
by definition, is another copy in a different location.

If rsnapshot just hardlinked the original file, then if the original
file goes bad, so does the hardlinked file. Making the backup somewhat
useless.
