I thought it does support hard links.

does tell this (... Microsoft launched an initiative in 1996 to rename
SMB to Common Internet File System (CIFS) (pronounced /??s??fs/), and
added more features, including support for symbolic links, hard
links ...).
Afaik cifs implementation on linux does support them too - so i get use
of the biggest benefit here.
Ah, fair enough. 1996 is about the last time I used anything Windowsy
for real work so I'm a bit out of date
that you're connecting to over CIFS supports them, then you're good, as
you'll get the intersection of their features.
