But how to do this for the cp command too (man page did not tell me

Isn't this what you need?

man cp:
-a, --archive
same as -dR --preserve=all
[..]
--preserve[=ATTR_LIST]
preserve the specified attributes
(default: mode,ownership,timestamps), if possible additional
attributes: context, links, xattr, all
