I ran some tests. In the default configuration with link_dest 0, old
metadata was corrupted; with link_dest set to 1, it wasn't. If you are
getting corruption with link_dest 1, that is a separate issue that
should be investigated.

man page says:

" link_dest 1
If your version of rsync supports --link-dest
(2.5.7 or newer), you can enable this to let rsync handle some things
that GNU cp or the built-in subroutines would otherwise do. Enabling
this makes rsnapshot take a slightly more complicated code branch,
but it's the best way to support special files on non-Linux systems.
"

what is this "1" on the man page. Is that the default value maybe?
I never got bothered by this option, because it talks about
"non-Linux" systems, while I'm totally linux everywhere. So I assumed
that this option is none of my concern.

What is the real purpose of this option? Does it affect me, if all
my partitions are formatted in ext3 (both the backup storage, and the
backup client)?

best regards
