"LVM 2 snapshot" + rnapshot ho
Author Message
Post "LVM 2 snapshot" + rnapshot ho
Hi,

What happens is that I use LVM2 with XEN virtualization.
I've got 15 Vm running. I want to make an LVM snapshot of a running VM
to avoid problem with somes daemons like LDAP or MYSQL and use
hotbackup script.

I would like to make a script that:
- make an LVM snapshot
- mount the LVM snapshot
- do rsnapshot backup
- remove the LVM snapshot

I've not used LVM, but my understanding is that its snapshots are true
point-in-time snapshots like what you get with expensive Netapps and the
like. Consequently, for *local* backups you almost certainly don't want
to use it with rsnapshot as well, as rsnapshot doesn't do as good a job
(we don't really do point-in-time snapshots).

It might make sense to rsnapshot an LVM snapshot, though, if you're on
a busy system. You'd need to wrap rsnapshot in a script to take the
LVM snapshot before running rsnapshot against whatever (presumably
read-only) mount-point manifests.

I believe that the main consideration would be to have enough space
for the LVM snapshot to survive until the worst-case rsnapshot is
complete, otherwise you'll cause strangeness for your users.

Simply write a script that does the mount/rsnapshot/unmount, and
put that in cron. You only apply it for the hourly run.

No - that doesn't work. The partition (or NFS share) must be mounted
for the "daily" and weekly" and "monthly" job too.

It looks to me like the mountpoint your script discusses is the
snapshot root, which would certainly need to be mounted before you run
anything. The original question was about rsnapshot'ing the contents
of an lvm2 snapshot, meaning a mount on the client machine, not the
rsnapshot server. So the wrapper would look like:

ssh $clientmachine script-to-make-and-mount-snapshot
rsnapshot hourly
ssh $clientmachine script-to-umount-and-clear-snapshot
