Post mv daily.5 to weekly.0
Hi,<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

Can some one clear my fuzzy head? I installed rsnapshot at work recently and just signed in to check the weekly backup. I found that the weekly backup does not contain the latest /home/ directory I created on Thursday yet the weekly happened in the early hours of this morning (Saturday). When I checked the latest daily, daily.0, created last night, it did have the directory in it.

As I understand it the weekly backup is created by moving the daily.5 backup to weekly.0 (daily.5 as we have 6 daily intervals). Why is daily.5 used when this is the oldest daily not the youngest. Am I missing some thing? Or does it sound like I have it configured wrongly. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks, mamnmamn

Hallo, Matthew,

Old fashioned backup strategy:

h0|h1|h2|h3
d0|d1|d2|d3|d4|d5|d6
w0|w1|w2|w3|w4|w5
m0|m1|m2|m3|...

That are all the backup "tapes" to be "rotated".
Clever rotating is first shifting the monthly "tapes" - m0 is now free.
Then renaming the oldest weekly "tape" (w5) to the youngest monthly
"tape" (m0). And so on ...

If you don't run the monthly backup, the oldest weekly "tape" gets lost.
And so on ...

Viele Gruesse!
Helmut
