while i'm looking into getting larger disks, i need to figure out how to
trim down the current space taken up by my backups.

i've already found that i can adjust the schedule. right now i've been
keeping 30 daily backups, and will shorten that and prune old backups.

however, i ran `rsnapshot du` and i found that, for example, daily.10 is
taking up a considerable amount of space. but i don't really want to
delete daily.10 thru daily.30. is it safe to just delete daily.10 or
will that botch up everything?

It is safe to delete daily.10 and shift daily.11 downwards to take the
place of daily.10. The same shifting needs to be done to all older
snapshots:
remove daily.10
rename daily.11 to daily.10
rename daily.12 to daily.11
...
rename daily.29 to daily.28

BUT you will probably not free as much disc space as you expect with
that operation.
For example if 11 days ago i.e. in daily.10 some very huge files were
added and copied to the snapshots, then just deleting daily.10 will not
free this space. These very huge files are still hard-linked in daily.9,
daily.8 et cetera.

In short deleting a single daily snapshot frees the disc space only for
those files that have no other hard-links to other snapshots anymore.
This may be the case for temporary files which existed only a few hours.
