Sorry if this has been discussed before. I'm brand new to rsnapshot.
I have rsnapshot configured to backup my local linux machine on a separate drive. It's working great, thanks to the directions in the man pages.

I would like to back up 2 large windows directories from 2 separate work locations to home over SSH. I would like the the backups to be done nightly, but I would like them to be done at different times (one at 2AM, the other at 4AM).

Can I set up my home machine to "pull" the files and changes from the offices? If so, how do I configure my rsnapshot.conf?
Or am I better off "pushing" the directories from my office to home with rsync running under Cywin?

Or do you suggest something else?

Thanks.

Larry

Hallo, Dr,

Yes.
You have to mount the Windows shares on your home machine somehow. In a
LAN that's easy ...

Or am I better off "pushing" the directories from my office to home
with rsync running under Cywin?

Should work - I haven't worked in this way yet.

Viele Gruesse!

Yes.

The way I tend to backup Windows machines that are on the same LAN is
to install cwRsync Server on the Windows machine and then configure
rsnapshot.conf something like this:

backup rsync://windowsbox1/c/ windowsbox1/c/
backup rsync://windowsbox1/d/ windowsbox1/d/
backup rsync://windowsbox2/c/ windowsbox2/c/

There is a link to a recipe for doing this at http://www.rsnapshot.org/howto/
under Supporting Windows clients.

Note that if the Windows machines were remote, you would probably
want to encrypt the traffic using ssh or similar, and put more
security restrictions into rsyncd.conf on the Windows side.
The cwRsync Server windows package includes OpenSSH as an option.

It would be easier with rsnapshot just to backup the windows machines
one after the other, rather than doing one at 2AM and one at 4AM.

If you really need to do that, you could have two rsnapshot.conf
files and have cron run one at 2AM and the other at 4AM. You would
also want to have two separate rsnapshot roots and lock files (in
case the 2AM one hasn't finished by 4AM). And you'd need to do
two lots of weekly/monthly rotations. I don't recommend it.

Pulling is the way to go with rsnapshot.
