Offsite Copy of Weekly rsnapshot

Post Offsite Copy of Weekly rsnapshot
We use rsnapshot locally to make backups daily of linux and windows boxes. I would like to the weekly.0 rsnapshot backup sent to an off-site server.

Does anyone have any suggestion on how best to do this?

Thanks,

SW

My rsnapshot repository is located on a (single) external disk (E-SATA).I actually have 2 such disks, which are mouted automagically at rsnapshot invocation (1) and I weekly switch disks, while the other one is kept off site.

You can use the same scripts to sync your rsnapshot repository or part of it to an external disk. Be sure to use the rsync -H option to have hard links preserved.

rsync -aH --delete --numeric-ids --relative $backup_root/ $backupdiskmountpoint/

You can easily adapt this to use a remote location over SSH of course.

If keeping a single copy of it off-site is sufficient, just rsync the
directory after the backup has completed. If multiple copies are
needed, I'd suggest using rsnapshot on the remote machine to take
backups of that particular snapshot on the local machine.

This can introduce embarassing mismatch and phase lag problems if the
"daily.0" moves out from under the transfer snapshot. If possible, try
to make sure that the snapshot to the other site happens only when
rsnapshot is not active.

Also, rsyncing a large set of snapshot targets is..... well often
inefficient due to handling all the hard links gracefully. If
possibly, only transfer a few snapshots, and think about breaking up
your .snapshot local repositories by host named subdirectories to
separate them.

He's talking about his *weekly.0*, which I would assume is done once a
week. Arranging for the offsite backup to happen when that's not being
touched should be trivial.

Also, rsyncing a large set of snapshot targets is..... well often
inefficient due to handling all the hard links gracefully.

He's talking about doing this *for a single snapshot*, so the hard links
between snapshots are irrelevant.
