rsnapshot seems to copy all data before back-ups

Post rsnapshot seems to copy all data before back-ups
Hi,

Why does rsnapshot seem to copy files over and over again? It becomes a high burdain on IO. I use rsnapshot in default settings and followed a howto at http://www.cyberciti.biz/faq/redhat-cetos-linux-remote-backup-snapshot-server/.

It seems that rsnapshot makes a lot of linked copies. Does this not cause a very high load on IO? I want to make sure the back-up solution is efficient and does not cost too much resources as rsnapshot is not the primary back-up solution, but should offer simple recovery for accidentally removed files, etc.

Also, if I remove a file on the server? Will I be able to recover this with rsnapshot? It seems rsnapshot works with --delete and I wonder if it makes sure that older files are not still copied for incremental back-ups and it will not destroy the back-up of the files itself. If I remove passwords.doc at the Linux-server, it will still be in the back-ups made before the removal of this file, right?

Thanks in advance, rsnapshot is a great product.

Unless you've picked a file system that doesn't support hard links it
doesn't do that. What it does do (well, what rsync does) is check to
see if the file has changed. Rsync does this by comparing the source
and the last backup. Assuming the last modified time and size haven't
changed (the default check) then the file won't be backed up again.

No backup solution will be overhead free. If all you want is a simple
option for recently deleted files then maybe file system snapshots
would be a better choice for you?

Yes. If it was backed up then you can recover it. Obviously you can't
recover anything that was deleted after the last backup.

I run rsnapshot on an Atom device.

My data set includes large files and hundreds of thousands of small files.

rSnapshot works fantastically. 5mins, even when 17 gig of files have changed.
