Post rsnapshot, some questions
Hallo ~D,

If I remove a file on my hdd, it is *not* removed from my
backupserver after a while right?

Not as long you keep one of the backups, it is in.

Most people here seem to keep only daily and weekly backups.
If you do that, too, and delete a file at the last of November, you
will loose it exactly the moment, the last of your backups of
November is deleted.

Or - if you keep backups longer - you will have lost a file, you had
on your hdd for the last week of November only, when the weekly of
November is away and the monthly is from the first week of
November.

Thanks for the hint, I didn't know about this option and how exactly it alters rsnapshot behavior.

If you set

the only lengthy operations are the syncing with .sync, and

Lowest interval still does cp -al, which can be long depending on
backup size

Not if you use

Then rsync should do all the work.

I have
sync_first 1
use_lazy_deletes 1
link_dest 1

Should I use all three options? ^

Other question, rsnapshot seems to handle interrupted backups pretty
well, good. But what if I miss for instance a monthly backup? What will
happen, cause the next monthly backup is scheduled obviously one month
further...

atm I have this cron file, see attachment..

And config files.

Comments are welcome!

I do it and it works fine.

I would change the crontab, IMHO the sync command makes sense only
with the hourly command:
rsnapshot sync && rsnapshot hourly

All the others should be alone (without the sync command):
rsnapshot daily
rsnapshot weekly
rsnapshot monthly

(times and configs omitted)

Yes, but you could use my do-rsnapshots.
