Rsnapshot to Windows Server 2003 Share

Post Rsnapshot to Windows Server 2003 Share
All,

I’m using rsnapshot to back up my linux server (Ubuntu 11.10). I mounted a Windows Server 2003 share to Ubuntu and ran the backups to that share. We then use Backup Exec to back up that directory to tape. What I’m seeing, though, is daily snapshots that, at least to my knowledge, doesn’t appear to be using links. Each daily snapshot directory is the same size and I know that much has not changed from day to day. I’ve read that rsnapshot won’t use links across some file systems but would work on newer versions of Windows. Does anyone have any experience doing this type of thing with a Server 2003 share?

Thank you,

First thing I'd try is to see if you can create hard links on that
filesystem manually, while it's mounted on the Ubuntu box:

$ cd /mnt/windows2003
$ touch wibble
$ ln wibble wobble
$ ls -li wibble wobble

which should show you something like ...

12429879 -rw-r--r-- 2 david staff 0 May 18 00:00 wibble
12429879 -rw-r--r-- 2 david staff 0 May 18 00:00 wobble

Note that the numbers in the first column must be the same as each other
and the number in the third column must be 2. If either of these isn't
the case, then hard links don't work on that volume. That could be for
any number of reasons:

* the filesystem doesn't support it;
* Windows doesn't support it;
* the protocol you use to mount the filesystem doesn't support it;
* Ubuntu's driver for that network filesystem doesn't support it;
* alien space bats
