What's the point of running a daily job at a certain time if it's not only
not creating a new backup for changed files, but ALSO it's creating the
latest daily from my most out-of-date hourly.
You already have a backup of things as they stand now. It's called
hourly.0. Having hourly.0 AND daily.0 be essentially the same data
doesn't buy you additional backup coverage. Longer term, what you
want is a stream of daily backups, and all you really care about is
whether you can get the data you need with the resolution you need,
and that's what you have.
Basically, think of it this way: You keep making backups to hourly.0,
shifting the old ones aside. As you go back through the stream,
backups are thinned out to save disk space and also to make it easier
to navigate.
Pro Hint:
ls -lt /.snapshots
this shows the snapshots with timestamps, sorted from newest to
oldest, rather than by path.
