Backup Central

I'm loving rsnapshot but we are having a few problems. We have some
directories with a ton of files in them and we're getting some errors.

I'd like to break up the backups of the home dirs so instead of

backup root < at > mvxserv.newberg.k12.or.us:/Users/ mvxserv/

we could do something like this
backup root < at > mvxserv.newberg.k12.or.us:/Users/a* mvxserv/
backup root < at > mvxserv.newberg.k12.or.us:/Users/b* mvxserv/
backup root < at > mvxserv.newberg.k12.or.us:/Users/c* mvxserv/

etc etc.

It seems that rsync or rsnapshot doesn't like this kind of
configuration. Does anyone have any ideas?

I don't believe rsync supports it, which means that rsnapshot doesn't
either. The normal way to cope with such large numbers of users is to
break user home directories into groups like ...

.../a/alice
.../a/andrew
.../b/billy
.../b/bob
.../c/catherine
.../c/charles

and so on, and then you'd have a backup line like this:

backup root < at > mvxserv.newberg.k12.or.su:/Users/a mvxserv/

for each letter of the alphabet. You can probably combine uncommon
letters, or ranges like a-d, e-i, j-whatever.
