Migrating 2 masters into one master
Author Message
Post Migrating 2 masters into one master
I am researching ideas on what needs to be done to combine 2 master server environments into 1 master environment.
Has anyone done this before? and any ideas and tips would be greatly appreciated.
My thoughts are to build a new master with both environments up and configured in new master and bring in the image and media database files.
Thanks
Don

There are several ways to do it and several ways to screw it up. Does your environment include disk backups (i.e. DSU or DSSU)? Are the operating systems the same? Are both versions the same? Are you willing to have the merged system NOT supported by Symantec. Are you willing to sacrifice tapes? (i.e. not use the old ones again until all data is expired). There are several more questions but I cannot think of them at the moment.

Answers to these question will determine which method is the best.

Patrick

Thanks for your reply Patrick, no no disk as of yet. And both OS are same vers but will be building 2008 new master. both master NBU versions the same. I could actually keep one of the current masters and migrate the db files into it. I am not sure why you thought the tapes would be no good anymore. worst case would be importing tape. but if the tape or media data has been merged, it should be in the catalog.

It's not that tapes would be no good, it's just that you can't use them
for new backups until all the images are expired, or, as you said, you
could import them all at approximately 2-4 hours per tape. If you search
google there are pages that explain how to merge the two as you have no
disk backups. I don't remember the exact steps, but there is at least
one that does not require Symantec and yet is still supported. The other
two methods require a Symantec qualified professional or they won't
support it.
One thing. Run NBCC on both masters until there are no problems, or you
will have many problems after the merge!!
