NBU 7.1.0.3

Post NBU 7.1.0.3
Anyone else being pressured to upgrade to 7.1.0.3 to support vSphere5 or Exchange 2010 SP2? I tried looking through the release notes, but I can't find exactly what 7.1.0.3 won't support. I'm pretty sure I read somewhere it was clustered datastores and the new filesystem. Is there a restriction with hardware level 8?

I'm not sure why our VMware folks are itching to upgrade, since the only new filesystem advantage I see is datastores > that 2 TB?

I would be nice if we can have a list of what works and what doesn't with regards to vSphere 5 and the 7.1.0.3 release.

Only speaking for myself here, but we’re looking at vSphere 5 for VMs with > 8 vCPUS (cores.)

I believe someone from Symantec posted here a few weeks ago that vSphere 5 was supported with the same functionality as vSphere 4 but that new functionality required 7.1.0.3. Do you know what this new functionality is (if any?) I could be mistaken.

If you are in a CPU dense, memory lean environment, the vSphere Enterprise for >6 core CPUs is a good reason. Similar for SRM.

I'm awaiting 7.1.0.3 to get fully baked to test/deploy myself.

Hi,

I did a bit of searching, and found a link to a post on the Symantec blog - access denied but still in google cache.
Hard to be sure why its no longer accessible, but it mentions some of what isn't supported until NBU 7.5. Maybe ask your rep for clarification about the items mentioned.

Now that VMware has officially announced their GA release of vSphere 5, you can rest easy in that NetBackup will be there to support it. What’s V-Ray? No, it’s not something you’d use to kill zombies (reference to a recent NetBackup blog entitled “DR of the Living Dead”) – but something organizations worldwide use to protect not only their physical machines and applications – but their virtual machines as well. Namely VMware. To see more detail on how Symantec integrates with VMware vStorage API for Data Protection and can protect thousands (not hundreds) of virtual machines, check out this video
In case you aren’t up on what’s included in vSphere 5 – here’s a quick summary:
Storage Dynamic Resource Scheduling (Storage DRS)
In vSphere 4, VMs could be manually moved to another datastore via Storage vMotion, typically during maintenance periods.  In vSphere 5, VMs can be automatically moved to another datastore based upon Storage DRS settings (e.g. capacity and throughput maximums) and runtime performance monitoring.
Datastore Cluster
A Datastore cluster defines a set of datastores where a VM can reside.  Storage DRS automatically moves the VM within the assigned datastore cluster, from one datastore to another.  Also, VM creation and recovery can be assigned to a datastore cluster, allowing Storage DRS to determine the actual datastore.
http://www.vmware.com/technical-resources/virtualization-topics/virtual-storage/storage-drs.html
NetBackup 7.5 will provide full vSphere 5 support, including Storage DRS and datastore clusters. Specifically:
  • The VM Intelligent Policy will recognize a datastore cluster as a backup source
  • The VM Recovery Wizard will recognize a datastore cluster as a restore destination
  • Storage DRS settings are included in VM backup & recovery

Note: NetBackup 7.1.0.3 (Q4CY11) will support pre-vSphere 5 capabilities within a vSphere 5 deployment.
